Scholars Meeting February 2011

AS PLANNED, the second scholars meeting of this year was held the last week of February. At the meeting, four American people were present who participated sharing some ideas with the workgroup they formed and then with all scholars. Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrator of Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow educational program of CHOI, introduced the guests. It was about the missionaries Forrest Cate, Brian McNair, Faith Robel and Rick Perry coming from Marietta city located in Georgia-USA. They were part of a mission team that often travels to Chimbote.

This time, the mission team was composed by 9 members of the Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC), which promotes and impulses the ABCD Chimbote project. They visited Chimbote for a week to support community development activities in favor of humble communities, by providing donations and labor. They were also exploring needy communities located in and around Chimbote to inquire about their basic needs in order to canalizing support, considering for this people/organizations willing to help, in any way, these communities.

Well, the purpose of this meeting was to conclude the ideas of community projects of the scholars that left outstanding and to start the feasibility study since, at the first meeting of this year, most of students defined their group project. Each student received copies and they were explained what feasibility study is, to improve their knowledge about this topic. After they received necessary information, it was time for them to answers the printed questions that were given to them, which will help them analyze the feasibility of their projects in three basic aspects:

• Operational
• Technical
• Economical

A support team was guiding students all the time for them to be able to develop the analysis. This team was designated by the program and led by Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, whose members were: Mr. Edwin Ruíz, Ms. Estefanía Moreno and me Pablo Beltrán (although I was coordinating with the mission team during their stay in Chimbote and also helping in translation).

At the end of the meeting, students shared on the progress of their ideas of community project. American visitors from MFUMC congratuled scholars for the projects designing and encouraged them to keep studying and supporting community development through their projects.

REUNIÓN DE BECARIOS, FEBRERO 2011

COMO ESTUVO PLANEADO, la segunda reunión de becarios de este año se llevó a cabo la última semana de febrero. En la reunión, estuvieron presentes cuatro americanos quienes participaron compartiendo ideas con el grupo de trabajo que ellos formaron y luego compartieron con todos los becarios. El Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrador del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Becarios y Líderes del Máñana, presentó a los invitados. Se trató de los misioneros Forrest Cate, Brian McNair, Faith Robel and Rick Perry procedentes de la ciudad de Marietta localizada en el Estado de Georgia-USA. Ellos fueron parte de un equipo misionero que con frecuencia viaja a Chimbote.

Esta vez, el equipo misionero estuvo conformado por 9 miembros de la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marieta (MFUMC), la cual promueve e impulsa el proyecto ABCD Chimbote. Ellos visitaron Chimbote por una semana para apoyar las actividades de desarrollo comunitario a favor de las comunidades humildes, proveyendo donaciones y disponiéndose ellos mismos a ofrecer su mano de obra. También, estuvieron explorando comunidades necesitadas ubicadas en y alrededor de Chimbote para informarse acerca de sus necesidades básicas con el propósito de canalizar apoyo, considerando para esto a las personas/organizaciones dispuestas a ayudar, de cualquie manera, a éstas comunidades.

Bien, el propósito de esta reunión fue concluir las ideas de proyectos comunitarios de los becarios que quedaron pendientes e iniciar el estudio de factibilidad ya que, en la primera reunión de este año, la mayor parte de los estudiantes definieron su proyecto grupal. Cada estudiante recibió copias y se les explicó qué es el estudio de factibilidad, para mejorar su conocimiento sobre el tema. Después que ellos recibieron la información necesaria, fue tiempo para que respondan a las preguntas impresas que se les dió, las cuales les ayudará a analizar la factibilidad de sus proyectos en tres aspectos básicos:

• Operativo
• Técnico
• Económico

Un equipo de apoyo estuvo orientando a los estudiantes todo el tiempo para que puedan desarrollar el análisis. Éste equipo fue designado por el programa y dirigido por el Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, cuyos miembros fueron: Sr. Edwin Ruíz, Srta. Estefanía Moreno y mi persona, Pablo Beltrán (aunque yo estaba coordinando con el equipo misionero durante su estadía en Chimbote y también apoyando en la traducción).

Al final de la reunión, los estudiantes compartieron sobre el progreso de sus ideas de proyecto comunitario. Los visitantes americanos de MFUMC felicitaron a los becarios por los proyectos que están diseñando y les animaron a seguir estudiando y apoyando el desarrollo comunitario a través de sus proyectos.
