SO FAR and through my previous posts you have been updated on the activities of the improvement project of the Caballero Rafael family's house, which is managed by CHOI and funded by Mrs. Micky Dalsin from Minnesota-USA. Now, I would like to share on the last activity carried out which involved the making of the house's finishes. First of all, it was necessary to put mastic on all Drywall walls to prepare them for the next step. When this was done, Javier Caballero (a family member) started to paint the walls of each house room. This way the improvement project of this house was successfully over.

At this point, I would also like to share, the feelings of Javier Caballero, who was helping actively throughout activities of the project. He is very thankful for all the support his family has received through this initiative. By means of this blog, he expresses his heartfelt thanks, at first, to God. He is also grateful to Mrs. Micky Dalsin from MN-USA who funded completely this project and that, on the other hand, continue funding his welding studies at a local institute, which will finish at the end of the year.

He also has grateful words to the CHOI Civil Asociation for managing the whole project and to people that got involved at it such as: Mr. Benjamín Aguilar, Mr. Carlos Alayo and the two French volunteers Victor Moissonnier y Pierre Del Grosso. It is expected to run the same kind of project for the benefit of another family. Will you be the next benefactor?

HASTA AHORA y a través de mis anteriores posts uds. han sido informados sobre las actividades del proyecto de mejoramiento de la casa de la familia Caballero Rafael, el cual es dirigio por CHOI y financiado por la Sra. Micky Dalsin de Minnesota-USA. Ahora, me gustaría compartir sobre la última actividad que se realizó la cual involucró hacer los acabados de la casa. Antes que nada, fue necesario masillar las paredes de Drywall para prepararlos para el próximo paso. Cuando se terminó de masillar, Javier Caballero (un miembro de la familia) empezó a pintar las paredes de las paredes de cada habitación de la casa. De esta manera el proyecto de mejoramiento de esta casa finalizó exitosamente.

En este punto, me gustaría compartir, los sentimientos de Javier Caballero, quien estuvo ayudando activamente en todas las actividades del proyecto. Él está muy agradecido por todo el apoyo que su familia ha recibido a través de esta iniciativa. Por medio de este blog, él expresa su más sincero agradecimiento, en primar lugar, a Dios. THROUGH THIS NEW POST, you will be updated on the next activities that were carried out as part of the improvement project of the Caballero Rafael family's house, which is led by CHOI and funded by Mrs. Micky Dalsin from Minnesota-USA. In the previous activity, all Drywall walls of the house were assembled. So, the next thing to do was to build the roof and with this goal in mind, people involved in this project started to build it. For this purpouse it was used asbestos cement corrugated planches because of their resistance and durability.

After a hard work putting planches in the right place, the activity of roof building was done. On the other side, the project also took into account the making of the concrete floor for the house since the existing one was extremely deteriorated. So, right after the roof was done workers started to make the cement floor to every room of the house. People involved in this activity indeed worked hard to make it.

Personas trabajando en el proyecto

A TRAVÉS DE ESTE nuevo post, conocerán acerca de las siguientes acividades que se llevaron a cabo como parte del proyecto de mejoramiento de la casa de la familia Caballero Rafael, el cual es dirigido por CHOI y financiado por la Sra. Micky Dalsin de Minnesota-USA. En la actividad previa, todas las paredes de Drywall de la casa se ensamblaron. De esta manera, el siguiente paso fue hacer el techo y con este objetivo en mente, las personas involucradas en el proyecto empezaron a construirlo. Para este propósito se usó planchas corrugadas de fibrocemento (eternit) por su resistencia y durabilidad.

Después de un arduo trabajo colocando las planchas de eternit en el lugar correcto, llegó a su término dicha actividad. Por otro lado, el proyecto también tomó en cuenta la hechura del piso de concreto de la casa ya que el existente estaba extremadamente deteriorado. Así que, inmediatamende después de terminado el techo los trabajadores empezaron a elaborar el piso de cemento para cada ambiente de la casa. Las personas involucradas en esta actividad ciertamente trabajaron de manera incansable para lograrlo.

Walls made of Drywall

HERE I AM ONCE AGAIN to continue sharing on the improvement project of the Caballero Rafael family's house. To carry out this new activity, it was necessary to buy previously galvanized steel battens and gypsum panels which make up the Drywall System. It was also bought paint and putty to do the finishes. The fund to acquire all these products was provided by Mrs. Micky Dalsin from Minnesota-USA who is the benefactor for this project. In the first place, workers started to assemble, on the brick foundations, galvanized steel structures to form walls for each room of the house.

After the assembly of the galvanized steel battens was done, workers started to fix the gypsum panels on the structure, making up this way the drywall walls. Right after, workers put putty on the walls of the house. As always, Mr. Benjamín Aguilar and Mr. Carlos Alayo, both from CHOI, were working in this activity together with the two French volunteers Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso. I will keep you updated on my next post.

AQUÍ ESTOY UNA VEZ MÁS para seguir compartiendo sobre el proyecto de mejoramiento de la casa de la familia Caballero Rafael. Para realizar esta nueva actividad, fue necesario comprar listones de acero galvanizado y paneles de yeso los cuales forman el sistema Drywall. También se compró pintura y masilla para hacer los acabados. El dinero para adquirir todos estos productos fue provisto por la Sra. Micky Dalsin de Minnesota-USA, quien es la benefactora del proyecto. En primer lugar, los trabajadores empezaron a ensamblar, sobre las bases de ladrillo, las estructuras de acero galvanizado para formar las paredes de cada habitación de la casa.

Después que terminó el ensamblaje de los listones de acero galvanizado, los trabajadores empezaron a fijar los paneles de yeso sobre las estructura, formando de esta manera las paredes de Drywall. Inmediatamente después, se empezó a masillar las paredes. Como en las actividades previas, El Sr. Benjamín Aguilar y el Sr. Carlos Alayo, ambos de CHOI, estuvieron en esta nueva actividad junto con los voluntarios franceses Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso. CONTINUING with the improvement project of the Caballero Rafael family's house, which is managed by CHOI and funded by Mrs. Micky Dalsin from Minnesota-USA, through this post I will share with you on the next activity of the project, which was to build the brick foundations, for each room of the house, upon which the drywall walls will be set up. Before keeping making reference to this project I will let you know what drywall building system is about. It is a modern building method consisting of gypsum plaques fixed to a galvanized steel structure. This system requires no water.

Here are some benefits of Drywall System:

• It can be used in all types or projects either in remodeling or new construction.
• It is flexible because it can be adapted to different shapes, sizes and designs.
• It has a high level of resistance to fire because the materials do not contribute to combustion.
• It provides both thermal and acoustic insulation.
• It does not expand or contract with changes in humidity and temperature.
• It is immune to fungus, pests and rodents.
• Its materials are lightweight, installation time is short and produces less waste. All this translates into lower cost.
• The electrical and hydraulic installations are easier and faster.
• Its surface accepts a wide range of finishes and coatings.

Well, coming back to the project, the following people were working on this new activity: Mr. Benjamín Aguilar, the two French volunteers (Victor Moissonnier y Pierre Del Grosso), Mr. Carlos Alayo, Javier Caballero (a family member). Micky Dalsin de Minnesota-USA, a través de este post compartiré con uds. sobre la siguiente actividad del proyecto, el cual fue hacer las bases de ladrillo para cada uno de los ambientes de la casa, y sobre los cuales se fijarán las paredes de drywall. Antes de seguir haciendo referencia al proyecto, les haré saber de qué se trata el Sistema de Construcción Drywall. Es un método de construcción moderno que consiste en placas de yeso fijadas a una estructura de acero galvanizada. Este sistema no requiere agua.

Estos son algunos de los beneficios del Sistema Drywall:

• Se puede utilizar en toda clase de proyectos, ya sean de remodelación u obras nuevas.
• Es flexible debido a que se puede adaptar a diferentes formas, dimensiones y diseños.
• Tiene un alto nivel de resistencia a los incendios debido a que los materiales no contribuyen a la combustión.
• Proporciona aislamientos tanto térmicos como acústicos.
• No se expande ni contrae con los cambios de humedad y temperatura.
• Es inmune a hongos, plagas y roedores.
• Sus materiales son livianos, el tiempo de instalación es corto y produce menos desperdicios. Todo esto se traduce en menor costo.
• Las instalaciones eléctricas e hidráulicas son más fáciles y rápidas.
• Su superficie acepta una gran gama de acabados y revestimientos.

Bien, regresando al proyecto, las siguientes personas estuvieron trabajando en esta nueva actividad: El Sr. Benjamín Aguilar, los dos voluntarios franceses (Victor Moissonnier y Pierre Del Grosso), Sr. Carlos Alayo, Javier Caballero (miembro de la familia). Dismantling the estera house

IF YOU VISIT poor communities of Chimbote, you'll see there are families that have built their houses using waste/recycled materials such as cardboards, sacks, bags for cement, etc; that is, because they can be easily reachable by the poor people at practically no cost. But, as you can imagine, houses made with this kind of materials have many disadvantages and don't provide security. Other families, making a great effort, can buy estera, which is the cheapest material that can be found and used mostly by the poor to build their house. Estera is a kind of flexible panel made of woven reed and used as wall and roof.

These families would like to live in a better house, providing protection and security for their family, but sadly they can't afford that because of the lack of money. At this point, it is pertinent to emphasize the support that an American lady is conceding to one of these families. I am talking about Mrs. Micky Dalsin from Minnesota-USA. She has visited Chimbote several times and in one of her trips she took some time to get to know closely the reality of the Caballero Rafael family, living near the Fr. Jack's parish, inside La Magnificant Quinta, which is an area where several families live.

The dad died many years ago and the mom left the family to focus on another engagement. So the family is only comprised by siblings: 20-year-old Javier Caballero (studies welding with Mrs. Micky Dalsin's support), 18-year-old Maria Elena Caballero (has a 1-year-old baby and works in a restaurant), 17-year-old Luis Caballero (studies at high school) and 14-year-old Reyna Caballero (studies at high school). On the other side, this American lady is also conceding money for the family to replace their estera house by one made of drywall.

Well, in coordination with Mr. Earl Milbrath and through CHOI, the improvement project of the Caballero Rafael family's house got started. Mr. Benjamín Aguilar, the coordinator of CHOI's Technical Education and Productive Workshops program, is in charge of it. Mr. Carlos Alayo together with two French volunteers, engineering students (Victor Moissonnier y Pierre Del Grosso), are supporting the running of this project. The first activity was to dismantle completely the estera house. This is the first project of housing building made of drywall CHOI is managing and it is expected to continue running more.

Desarmando la casa de estera

SI VISITA LAS COMUNIDADES POBRES de Chimbote, verá que hay familias que han construído sus casas usando materiales de reciclado tales como cartones, sacos, bolsas de cemento, etc; los cuales son de fácil acceso por la gente y, practicamente, no incluyen costo alguno. Pero, como podrá imaginar, este tipo de casas tienen muchas desventajas y no proveen seguridad. Otras familias, haciendo un gran esfuerzo, pueden comprar estera, que es el material más barato que se puede encontrar y mayormente usado por las familias pobres para hacer sus casas. La estera es un tipo de panel flexible hecho de caña tejida y se usa como pared y techo.

A estas familias les gustaría vivir en una mejor casa, que les provea protección y seguridad, pero lamentablemente no pueden hacerlo por falta de dinero. En este punto, es oportuno resaltar el apoyo que una dama americana esta concediendo a una de estas familias. Me refiero a la Sra. Micky Dalsin de Minnesota-USA quien ha visitado Chimbote varias veces y en uno de sus viajes llegó a conocer de cerca la realidad de la familia Caballero Rafael, que vive cerca a la parroquia del padre Juan, dentro de la quinta Magnificat, el cual es un área donde viven varias familias.

El papá falleció hace muchos años y la mamá tiene otro compromiso, así, la familia está formada sólo por hermanos: Javier Caballero de 20 años (estudia soldadura con el apoyo de la Sra. Micky), María Elena Caballero de 18 años (tiene un hijo de 1 año y trabaja en un restaurant), Luis Caballero de 17 años (estudia en secundaria) y Reyna Caballero de 14 años (estudia en secundaria). Por otro lado, esta dama americana también está concediendo dinero para reemplazar la casa de estera de esta familia por una hecha de drywall.

Bien, en coordinación con el Sr. Earl Milbrath y a través de CHOI, se dió inicio al proyecto de mejoramiento de la casa de la familia Caballero Rafael. El Sr. Benjamín Aguilar, coordinador del programa de Educación Técnica y Talleres Productivos, está a cargo de ello. El Sr. Carlos Alayo junto con 2 voluntarios franceses, estudiantes de ingeniería (Victor Moissonnier y Pierre Del Grosso), están apoyando la ejecución del proyecto. La primera actividad fue desarmar completamente la casa de estera. Este es el primer proyecto de construcción de vivienda hecha de drywall que CHOI está gestionando y se espera seguir ejecutando más.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 3

AND THIS WAS the third and last working day of the Lamoure group from ND-USA improving three houses here in Chimbote. The members group started their activities in the morning. They all made a great effort to advance the improvement of the houses. So, young and adult people worked hard. After lunch they all continued working with a goal on mind: To provide a decent house to these families for them to live with dignity. They kept working until the sun went down.

At this point, I'd like to share with you, the heartfelt thanks expressed by each of the beneficiaries to the members of the Lamoure group. Mrs. Sandra Torres said: "I am very thankful to this American group for improving the house where I live with my family. May God bless and have a good trip." Mrs. Yovanna said: "I feel so happy because of the great support I have received from this American benefactors group, many thanks for your kindness showed to me and my family. May God bless you richly".

Mrs. Esperanza said: "Thank you very much for all you have done for my family. Thank you for improving my house, for giving a bed away to me and for installing a sewer pipe. I will always remeber you for their kind heart. May God bless you and have a nice trip." This way the mission of the Lamoure group finished here in Chimbote-Perú. I just wanna say, thank you ever so much for keeping in your heart and mind to those needy people of Chimbote.

Y ÉSTE FUE el tercer y último día de trabajo que realizó el grupo Lamoure de ND-USA mejorando tres casas aquí en Chimbote. Los miembros del grupo empezaron sus actividades en la mañana. Todos hicieron un gran esfuerzo para avanzar el mejoramiento de las casas. Así que, los jóvenes y adultos trabajaron denodadamente. Después del almuerzo todos siguieron trabajando con un propósito en mente: Proveer una casa decente a estas familias para que vivan con dignidad. Ellos siguieron trabajando hasta que el sol se puso.

En éste punto, me gustaría compartir con ustedes, el más sincero agradecimiento que expresaron las beneficiarias a los miembros del grupo Lamoure. La señora Sandra Torres dijo: "Estoy muy agradecida a éste grupo americano por mejorar la casa donde vivo con mi familia. Que Dios les bendiga y que tengan un buen viaje". La señora Yovanna dijo: "Me siento muy feliz debido al gran apoyo que he recibido de éste grupo de benefactores americanos, muchas gracias por su bondad que mostraron a mi familia y a mí. Que Dios les bendiga ricamente".

La señora Esperanza dijo: "Muchas gracias por todo lo que han hecho for mi familia. Gracias por mejorar mi casa, por donarme una cama y por instalar la tubería de desagüe. Siempre les recordaré por su noble corazón. Que Dios les bendiga y tengan un buen viaje". De esta manera, la misión del grupo Lamoure terminó aquí en Chimbote-Perú. Sólo me resta decir, muchísimas gracias por mantener en su mente y corazón a las personas necesitadas de Chimbote.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 2

ON THIS POST, I will share about the second day of activities carried out by the Lamoure group from ND-USA in its home improvement project. Early in the morning, each of the three teams headed to the respective houses they had started improving. On this day, they continued doing the work that started yesterday. After lunch, they all returned to the houses to keep working. At the end of the afternoon, the first team, that was working in Mrs. Sandra Torres' house, had finished to build an estera room.

Mrs. Sandra, in a short interview said: "As I see my hose being built, I feel so happy since now I will have a safer place where to live and that gives my family and me, a feeling of protecction". The second team finished the day having built a room and a half. The owner of this house said: "A while ago, I felt very worried because my house had deteriorated and we had no money to improve it, since we spent money in my son's treatment who finally died of leukemia. But now I feel happy of seeing my house being improved".

At the end of the afternoon, the third team had finished to build a room. Mrs. Esperanza Morales, beneficiary of this project, said: "I used to live in a rented room which was a very small place for me and my children to live. we felt no freedom living there. Now, I feel so happy specially for my children, since we will have a better place to live." Well, the second activities day of the Lamoure group finished this way.

EN ÉSTA ENTRADA, compartiré acerca del segundo día de actividades realizadas por el grupo Lamoure de ND-USA en su proyecto de mejoramiento de vivienda. Temprano por la mañana, cada uno de los tres equipos se dirigieron a las respectivas casas que habian empezado a mejorar. En este día, ellos siguieron haciendo el trabajo que empezaron ayer. Después del almuerzo, todos regresaron a las casas para seguir trabajando. Al final de la tarde, el primer equipo, que estuvo trabajando en la casa de la Sra. Sandra Torres, había terminado de construir una habitacion de estera.

La Sra. Sandra, en una corta entrevista dijo: "A medida que veo a mi casa siendo construída, me siento muy feliz ya que ahora tendré un lugar más seguro donde vivir y eso le dá a mi familia y a mí, un sentimiento de protección". El segundo equipo terminó el día habiendo construído una habitación y media. La dueña de ésta casa dijo: "Hace un tiempo atrás, me sentí muy preocupada porque mi casa se había deteriorado y no teníamos dinero para mejorarla, ya que gastamos dinero en el tratamiento de mi hijo quien finalmente murió de leucemia. Pero ahora me siento feliz de ver que mi casa está siendo mejorada".

Al final de la tarde, el tercer equipo había terminado de construir una habitación. La Sra. Esperanza Morales, beneficiaria de éste proyecto, dijo: "Solía vivir en un cuarto alquilado el cual era un lugar muy pequeño para que mis hijos y yo vivamos. No sentíamos libertad viviendo allí. Ahora, me siento muy feliz especialmente por mis hijos, ya que tendremos un mejor lugar donde vivir". Bien, el segundo día de actividades del grupo Lamoure terminó de esta manera.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 1

AS PLANNED, the Lamoure group from North Dakota-USA, comprised by 18 poeple, came down to Chimbote-Perú in order to support some poor families in the improvement of their houses. Their first day of activities started on Monday, June 6. The whole group, together with the ACAF social worker Ana Caldas, the volunteering coordinator Peter Jensen, translators and me, Pablo Beltrán (CHOI non-profit representative); left the ACAF compound, located in La Victoria neighborhood, and went to the selected houses where the group would start working.

The group leader, Mrs. Marie Ann Bitz, shared with me about the willingness of her group to support the Chimbote Community Development. Well, we all stopped by Mrs. Rosa Nieves' house to see the concrete front wall, whose building the group funded. Then, we got to Mrs. Sandra Torres' house, the first one the American volunteers chose to work. The group was divided into 3 teams and one of them stayed in this house to start the home improvement process.

The second team went to Mrs. Yovanna Estrada's house and inmediatly started working. The third team got to Mrs. Esperanza Morales' house with the same purpose and also to prepare the installation of the sewer pipe in her house. After a while some members of this team went to volunteer to the Holy Family youth saloon, which is a place specially for children having some difficulties in learning. So, the volunteers were assisting some children in doing their homeworks. This way, the first work day of the group was over.

ACTIVIDADES DEL GRUPO LAMOURE 2011 - DÍA 1

COMO ESTUVO PLANEADO, el grupo Lamoure de Dakota del Norte-USA, formado por 18 personas, llegaron a Chimbote-Perú con el propósito de apoyar a algunas familiar pobres en el mejoramiento de sus casa. Su primer día de actividades empezó el lunes 6 de junio. Todo el grupo, junto con la asistenta social de ACAF Sra. Ana Caldas, el coordinadore de voluntariado Peter Jensen, los traductores y yo, Pablo Beltrán -representante del proyecto Chimbote ABCD-, partimos desde las oficinas de ACAF, localizada en el barrio La Victoria, y fuimos a las casas selecionadas donde el grupo empezaría a trabajar.

La líder del grupo, Sra. Marie Ann Bitz, comaprtió conmigo acerca de la disposición de su grupo para apoyar el desarrollo comunitario de Chimbote. Bien, en el camino pasamos por la casa de la Sra. Rosa Nieves para ver la frontera de concreto, cuya construcción el grupo financió. Luego, llegamos a la casa de la Sra. Sandra Torres, la primera que los americanos voluntarios elegieron para trabajar. El grupo se dividió en tres equipos y uno de ellos permaneció en ésta casa para empezar el proceso de mejoramiento de la vivienda.

El segundo equipo fue a la casa de la Sra. Yovanna Estrada e inmediatamente empezaron a trabajar. El tercer equipo llegó a la casa de la Sra. Esperanza Morales con el mismo propósito y también para preparar la instalación de la tubería de desague en su casa. Después de un momento algunos miembros de éste equipo fueron a hacer trabajo de voluntariado en el Salón Juvenil Sagrada Familia, el cual es un lugar especialmente para los niños que tienes problemas de aprendizaje. Así, los voluntarios estuvieron a algunos niños a hacer sus tareas escolares. De esta manera terminó el primer día de trabajo del grupo.

ON MY PREVIOUS posts I have been sharing about courses offered to children, young people and adult by CHOI, through its Summer School 2011. This time, all those interested in English language had the opportunity to learn it, for some American volunteers were teaching this language. Classes started on January 24 and were developed in the number 4 room at the Youth House in Antenor Orrego. Here in Perú, the learning of the English language is very important and it is included in each of levels of the educational system, becoming part of the professional profile of higher-level students.

For these reasons, CHOI has considered the English teaching as a way to assist students in their process of educational training. It is worthy to highlight the complete willingness that had the american volunteers to teach English to the Peruvian students. It was a good opportunity for them to learn this language, specially taught by English native speakers. Another great initiative of CHOI!

ESCUELA DE VERANO CHOI 2011: CLASES DE INGLÉS

EN MIS ANTERIORES posts he estado compartiendo acerca de los cursos ofrecidos a los niños, jóvenes y adultos por CHOI, a través de su Escuela de Verano 2011. Ésta vez, todos los interesados en el idioma inglés tuvieron la oportunidad de aprenderlo, pues algunos voluntarios americanos estuvieron enseñando este idioma. Las clases empezaron el 24 de enero y se desarrollaron en el salón Nro 4 de la Casa de la Juventud en el barrio Antenor Orrego. Aquí en Perú, el aprendizaje del idioma inglés es muy importante y está incluído en cada uno de los niveles del sistema educativo, llegando a formar parte del perfil profesional de los estudiantes de nivel superior.

Por éstas razones, CHOI ha considerado la enseñanza de inglés como una manera de apoyar a los estudiante en su proceso de formación educativa. Es digno resaltar la completa disposición que tuvieron las voluntarias americanas para enseñar inglés a los estudiantes peruanos. Fue una buena oportunidad para que ellos aprendan este idioma, el cual fue especialmente enseñado por nativos hablantes del inglés. ¡Otra gran iniciativa de CHOI!.

USA Rotarian Leaders Visit Chimbote

A FEW WEEKS AGO, an American team comprised for three leaders of Chanhassen Rotary Club, located in Minnessota-USA, visited Chimbote. The present president of the Club Mrs. Carol Lee, the past president Mr. Wayne Larson and Mr. Earl Milbrath traveled several hours by plain then by bus in order to fulfill an agenda focused on development community which included visits to local organizations working in favor of those less advantaged in this city.

On this context, they visited Chimbote Rotary Club and talked to its leaders about the work this Chimbotano Club is carrying out for community and the possibility the American Club may canalize any kind of support to the local Club. Then they visited Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI) non-profit organization and its community programs and were informed on their purposes. Also, they were working as volunteers assiting on the making of the floor made of concrete blocks for "Los 8 Enanitos" wawawasi located in F-7 San Miguel neighborhood.

They took some time to get involved with CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow program by participating in the first scholars meeting 2011 which takes place monthly and where students are trained as leaders and also share about their community projects. These were some of the main activities our American Rotarian friends performed while here in this warm city called Chimbote.

LÍDERES ROTARIOS AMERICANOS VISITAN CHIMBOTE

HACE ALGUNAS semanas atrás, un equipo americano formado por tres líderes del Club Rotary de Chanhassen, ubicado en Minessota-USA, visitaron Chimbote. La actual presidenta del Club Sra. Carol Lee, el anterior presidente Sr. Wayne Larson and el Sr. Earl Milbrath viajaron varias horas en avión y luego en bus para cumplir una agenda enfocada en el desarrollo comunitario la cual incluía visitas a organizaciones locales que trabajan a favor de los menos favorecidos de ésta ciudad.

En este contexto, visitaron el Club Rotary de Chimbote y conversaron con sus líderes sobre el trabajo que el Club viene realizando a favor de la comunidad y sobre la posibilidad que el Club americano pueda canalizar algún tipo de apoyo al Club local. Luego, vivistaron la Organización No Gubernamental Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI) y sus programas comunitarios y se informaron sobre sus propósitos. También, estuvieron trabajando como voluntarios apoyando en la elaboración del piso hecho de bloques de concreto para el wawawasi "Los 8 Enanitos" ubicado en el barrio San Miguel F-7.

Además, tomaron un tiempo para involucrarse en el programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Becarios y Líderes del Mañana, participando en la primera reunión de becarios del 2011 el cual se lleva a cabo mensualmente y donde los estudiantes son capacitados como líderes y también comparten sobre sus proyectos comunitarios. Éstas fueron algunas de las actividades principales que nuestros amigos Rotarios americanos realizaron mientras estuvieron aquí, en ésta cálida ciudad llamada Chimbote.

Making Children Happy

ON CHRISTMAS TIME we remember The Birthday of God's Son on earth: JESUS CHRIST. So, it is a time for celebration and children especially get excited and hope to have a good time of joy and happiness. Each Christmas season is a time full of illusion for them all and no matter if they are poor or rich they hope receiving, one way or another, some presents such as clothes, toys, etc. Some of them have the great opportinity for their dreams to come true since their parents count on enough resources for it, not so for many of children especially those living in poor neighborhoods here in Chimbote where the money their parents count on, is exclusively used to get the food for the day.

But thanks God there are still goodwill people and institutions that were very interested in bringing a joy and happiness time to the poor children living in neighborhoods surrounding "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" parish located in La Victoria, Chimbote, Perú where Fr. Jack Davis (USA) and Sr. Peggy Byrne (Ireland) minister to the poor. To make all this possible, the SKA supermarket of Chimbote through its manager, in coordination with the executive director of CHOI Mr. Orlando Bermúdez organized a chocolate party to the children of these neighborhoods which was held at Fr. Jack's parish. SKA Supermarket donated Christmas breads, chocolate party, a lot of presents, balloons, party, etc.

For the development of this event I must highlight the support of the following people: American and Peruvian volunteers, Scholars from Dollars For Scholars program of CHOI and parish workers. The event started 10:00am and was led by two funny clowns that made children laugh a lot. There was a time to dance, play, reward winners, draw, share balloons, shout, etc. and at the end of the party children made a line and went orderly into a big room of the parish where each of them received a present, glass of chocolate and Christmas bread. My heartfelt thanks to all those that made poor children of Chimbote happy on this Christmas 2010!!

HACIENDO FELICES A LOS NIÑOS

EN LA ÉPOCA DE NAVIDAD recordamos el Nacimiento del Hijo de Dios en la tierra: JESUCRISTO. Asi que, es un tiempo de celebración y especialmente los niños se emocionan y esperan tener un buen tiempo de alegría y felicidad. Cada temporada de Navidad es un tiempo lleno de ilusión para todos ellos y no importando si son pobres o ricos esperan recibir, de una u otra manera, algunos regalos tales como ropa, juguetes, etc. Algunos de ellos tienen la oportunidad que sus sueños se realicen ya que sus padres cuentan con suficientes recursos para ello, no así para muchos niños especialmente para aquellos que viven en los barrios pobres de Chimbote donde el dinero con el que cuentan sus padres se usa exclusivamente para conseguir la comida del día.

Pero gracias a Dios todavía hay gente e instituciones de buena voluntad que estuvieron muy interesados en traer un tiempo de alegría y felicidad a los niños pobres que viven en los barrios humildes alrededor de la parroquia "Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro" ubicada en La Victoria, Chimbote, Perú donde el padre Juan Davis (USA) y la hermana Peggy Byrne (Irlanda) ministran a los pobres. Para hacer todo esto posible, el Supermercado SKA de Chimbote en la persona de su administradora, en coordinación con el director ejecutivo de CHOI Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, organizaron una chocolatada para los niños de estos barrios la cual se llevó a cabo en la parroquia del padre Juan. El Supermercado SKA donó los panetones, chocolatada, muchos regalos, globos, la fiesta, etc.

Para el desarrollo de éste evento debo resaltar el apoyo de las siguientes personas: Voluntarios americanos y peruanos, becarios del programa Dólares para Becarios de CHOI and trabajadores de la parroquia. El evento empezó a las 10:00am y fue dirigido por dos divertidos payacitos que divirtieron bastante a los niños. Hubo tiempo para bailar, jugar, premiar a los ganadores, dibujar, compartir globos, aclamar, etc. y al final de la fiesta los niños formaron una cola y entraron ordenadamente a un salon grande de la parroquia donde cada uno de ellos recibió su regalo, vaso de chocolate y panetón. ¡¡Mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos aquellos que hicieron felices a los niños pobres de Chimbote en ésta navidad 2010!!

Affordable Housing Project - 11: Los Amigos Board Visit

IT IS INSPIRING and encouraging seeing how foreign people take part of their time to come down, very willing and from a far away country, to assist the poor people of Chimbote. Some days ago the Los Amigos Board of Director members, a Non-Profit Faith-Based American Organization working for the poorest of Chimbote - Perú since many years ago, were visiting this town in order to carry out their scheduled activities as Board members. On this trip, they were not only performing activities inherent to their official responsabilities but also took time to work by helping in building of the Morán Ballesteros family's house, which was chosen to be the Affordable and Safe Housing Pilot Plan - an initiative of CHOI's nascent housing project. Well, as you have learnt from my anterior post, there was still work to do in the pilot plan.

So this enthusiastic American team, from early in the morning, began working on several activities by: Painting the side walls of the house; caulking concrete blocks of the floor; painting the walls of the living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom; helping to build the second and the third bedroom, etc. The Los Amigos Board was composed by: Vice President Mr. Mike Christenson (the Presidente Mr. Ron Stensgard visited Chimbote some weeks ago), Treasureer Mr. Scott Sanders, Secretary and Economic Opportunities Council Chairman Mr. Earl Milbrath, present Executive Director Ms.Susan Thrnka, among others.

That day there was a nourished mixture of people working on the demo home. CHOI's Executive Director Mr. Orlando Bermúdez was also there together with CHOI's External Consultant Mr. Jorge Villar. This way Peruvian workers, guided by the Engr. Pablo Muguerza, were greatly supported in the execution of the demo and so, the Affordable and Safe Housing demo is nearly finished.

PROYECTO VIVIENDA ECONÓMICA - 11: VISITA DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA DE "LOS AMIGOS"

ES INSPIRADOR y anima el ver como gente extranjera toma parte de su tiempo para venir, muy dispuestos y desde un lejano país, para ayudar a los pobres de Chimbote. Hace algunos días los miembros de la junta directiva de LOS AMIGOS, una organización norteamericana sin fines de lucro y basada en la fe que trabaja por los más pobres de Chimbote - Perú desde hace muchos años, estuvieron visitando ésta ciudad con el objetivo de desarrollar sus actividades programadas como miembros de la directiva. En este viaje, ellos no solo estuvieron cumpliendo actividades inherentes a sus responsabilidades oficiales sino que también se dieron tiempo para trabajar ayudando en la construcción de la casa de la familia Morán Ballesteros, la cual fue elegida para ser el Piloto de Vivienda Económica y Segura - una iniciativa del naciente proyecto de vivienda de CHOI. Bien, como ustedes saben de mi anterior post, todavía había trabajo que hacer en el piloto.

Así, este equipo americano entusiasta, empezó a trabajar desde temprano en varias actividades: Pintando el muro perimétrico de la casa; masillando los bloques de concreto del piso de la casa; pintando las paredes de la sala, comedor, cocina y dormitorio; ayudando a construir el segundo y tercer dormitorio, etc. La Directiva de LOS AMIGOS estuvo compuesta por: El Vice Presidente Sr. Mike Christenson (el presidente Sr. Ron Stensgard visitó Chimbote hace algunas semanas), Tesorero Sr. Scott Sanders, Secretario y Director del Concejo de Oportunidades Económicas Sr. Earl Milbrath, actual Directora Ejecutiva Sra. Susan Thrnka, entre otros.

Ese día hubo una nutrida mezcla de personas trabajando en la casa piloto. El Director Ejecutivo de CHOI Sr. Orlando Bermúdez también estuvo allí junto con el Consultor Externo de CHOI Sr. Jorge Villar. De esta manera los trabajadores peruanos, guiados por el Ing. Pablo Muguerza, fueron grandemente apoyados en la ejecución del demo y así, el Piloto de Vivienda Económica y Seguea está casi terminada.

Living In Extreme Poverty

HERE IN CHIMBOTE there is a lot of very poor neighborhoods located in the outskirts of the city where most families live in extreme poverty. The great need to meet is food. So they do their best, in any way, I mean, in amazing ways, in order to earn some money to provide food for the whole family. It is about surviving each single day so there is no room to think of other needs, which is also necessary to focus on. One of those families is the Morán Ballesteros family living in Q-13 "10 de Setiembre" neighborhood. This familiy is composed by 6 people.

Mr. Evaristo Jaime Morán Campos is the family father and is 42 years old (his wife passed away because of bronchopneumonia in december 2007. When she was alive she used to sell cinnamon, cloves, pepper, salt and other spices walking around a local market called "2 de Mayo" and sometimes cooked for other people to make money) Presently Mr. Evaristo works in a fishing factory from Monday to Saturday and from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm but, unfortunately fishing is not a very profitable activity currently as it used to be before. So when he does not work at fishing factory he goes to a local market to sell pencils, pens, erasers, keyholders, etc. walking around.

These are his children: Edwar William Morán Ballesteros is the oldest son and is 18 years old. He suffered a terrible sickness when he was 2 years old. He overcame it but sadly his nervous system was affected slightly. He studied only at elementary school until the second grade. Jaime Junior Morán Ballesteros is 17 years old. He studied at high school until the second year; three years left for he to finish high school. He currently works selling the same stuff as his dad. He would like to finish high school and study at university or technical school. When he was at school he was trained as a carpenter. He is smart and took advantage of circumstances to learn shoemaking and welding also. Currently a friend of his is teaching him how to make bread.

Estefany Johana Morán Ballesteros is 15 years old. She studied in high school but only until the first year. She takes care of her younger brother who is disabled. Pedro José Morán Ballesteros is 12 years old and this little boy is disabled. He attended a special school for disabled children but only for two years. Ana Saraí Morán Ballesteros is the youngest and is 8 years old. She attended elementary school and studied there only until the second grade. She is no longer attending school but she would like to. I saw she also has ability to study. Even though all of them were studying in public schools for free however there are several expenses they had to face like cost of uniforms, school supplies, fee for copies, workshops, etc. Unfortunately the family didn't and doesn't have enough money for them to continue to study.

The family does not even have enough money to build their house because, as I told you lines above, all money earned must be used to buy food. The only choice they had to build their house was to use "estera" for walls and roof, a very cheap but unsafe material for this purpose. Each estera is a very flexible panel made of reed woven which is used by poor families. Some disadvantages of estera: Highly flammable, permeable to cold, short duration, vulnerable to theft, etc. In 2002 the non-profit organization Los Amigos del Padre Juan built a bathroom made of cement for this family. Some days ago its president Mr. Ron Stensgard visited this house.

A Fundraising Activity

AS A PART OF THEIR ACTIVITIES as volunteers assisting the affordable housing project called Concrete Blocks for Floor and Papercrete Panels for Walls, the two French youth named Romain Wyts and Maxime Antier have organized and promoted their first fundraising activity. Money collected will be handed over the non-profit organization CHOI, which leads the project.

The goal of the project is to offer to the residents of the very poor neighborhoods in Chimbote, especially those like the 25 de Mayo neighborhood and surrounding ones, new kinds of affordable and safe building materials, instead of reeds and esteras (a kind of panel made of reed woven and used for wall and roof) which are not safe but are very flammable. It is also expected a pilot house will be able to be built using these new construction materials.

This fundraising activity was held on Saturday, July 3rd at 8:30 in the evening, at the backyard of Fr. Jack Davis's parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help in La Victoria neighborhood. It was promoted under the title: GREAT BINGO AND KARAOKE. The price of every bingo card was S/ 2.00 ($ 0.70) and people could buy them at Sr. Edith's office in the parish or from the volunteers Romain and Maxime. There were 5 prizes for 5 winners of the bingo and also one for the best karaoke singer.

These were the Bingo Prizes:

1. Family cake
2. Set of books
3. School supplies
4. Gift from Fr. Jack Davis
5. Dinner with a volunteer of your choice

According to the volunteers, the event met expectations since many people collaborated with this initiative. The two French volunteers have also organized another fundraising activity, to continue to help the housing project, which will be held on Sunday July 18th. I will also share with you all about this new activity.

Making Improved Prototypes

UNDER THE MOTTO "BETTER HOUSE, BETTER LIFE"; the housing project called "Making of Concrete Blocks for Floor and Papercrete Panels for Walls" continues to be executed. The last information I shared with you all on it, was about the results of the quality control laboratory of a local university which suggested improving the mixture quality that was used to make concrete blocks as well as papercrete panels so that they will be more resistant to pressure forces. In this new post I would like to share about the new prototypes that were built based on the laboratory results.

In this part of my post I would like you to know that two people have joined this project as volunteers from a very faraway country located in Europe. They are two French youth that will stay here in Chimbote city for awhile and while here they are very willing to assist the activities of the project. Their names are Roman WYTS and Maxime ANTIER. They are planning to perform some economic activities in a near future to raise funds for assisting this project, which I am going to post here on the blog of CHOI.

Well, coming back to the project, according to the suggestion of the laboratory, the mixture was improved and a new prototype of concrete block and a new one of papercrete panel were built over three weeks ago but, after the few days that it took for the prototypes to dry, it was discovered that the thickness of the papercrete panel was very thin, which meant the mold that they used was inappropriate. The thickness of the concrete block was ok.

So, to solve this problem it was necessary to build a new mold with the correct thickness, and with this a new prototype of papercrete panel was built. Samples of concrete block and paperpcrete panel had already been sent to the laboratory. As usual, it took some days for the prototype to dry.

After some days, the results from the laboratory said that concrete block and papercrete panel samples have successfully passed the tests for quality control related to resistance to pressure force. Now it is needed to test the papercrete panel again, but this time to see how resistant it is to fire. I will share this activity in my next post.
