10th Anniversary Of The "Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow" Scholarship Program

We have just finished the tenth year of our Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow scholarship program in Chimbote, Peru! The program is sponsored by Chanhassen and Chimbote Rotary Clubs and has had 149 students in university and technical schools in Chimbote and 39 graduates including 10 who have just finished their studies and will graduate in January. In our annual survey of graduates’ employment, 65% were working which is very good considering the high degree of unemployment in Chimbote. More details of the program are included in the attached DFS Appeal that was sent to all District 5950 International Service Officers in September.

I am sending this email to the Presidents of the supporting clubs and hope you will extend our thanks to all of your members.

We currently have 25 students in our Pre-University Academy preparing for the admissions exams and anticipate that 16 will begin school in April with 54 returning students. Our budget is $35,000, or $500 per student, and we have received cash or commitments of about $30,000, including expected proceeds from a fund raiser that is being sponsored by South Metro Minneapolis Evenings Rotary Club.

In addition to being U.S. fund raiser for the Dollars For Scholars program, I am also on the executive team and board of Friends of Chimbote -a U.S. 501 c 3 organization that raises funds to serve the poor of Chimbote- and chair of their Economic Opportunity Council whose transformational programs are delivered through Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI), a non-profit Peruvian civil association. CHOI administers the Dollars For Scholars program and also has a Vocational Training program with 80 students and a Micro Lending program serving 240 small business entrepreneurs.

I would welcome the opportunity to visit your club and give your members an update on Dollars For Scholars and our other programs to give the poor of Chimbote the opportunity to escape the abject poverty in which they live.

Estoy enviando este email a los presidentes de los Clubes que nos han apoyado y espero que extiendan nuestro agradecimiento a todos sus miembros.

Actualmente tenemos 25 estudiantes en nuestra Academia Pre-Universitaria preparándose para los exámenes de admisión y anticipamos que 16 empezarán sus estudios en abril con 54 estudiantes que regresan. Nuestro presupuesto es de $35,000 o $500 por estudiante, y hemos recibido dinero en efectivo o compromisos de aproximadamente $30,000, incluyendo ingresos esperados de un evento de recaudación de fondos que está siendo patrocinado por el Club Rotario South Metro Minneapolis Evenings.

HER NAME is Carmen Rubí Echevarría Valderrama, is 22 years old and lives in 135 Constitución St. El Progreso neighborhood, Chimbote. Her dad's name is Dimas Echevarría and her mom's Carmen Valderrama. Both had 4 children. Rubí is a cheerful and intelligent girl. After finishing high school she took and passed the entrance examination at the National University of Santa starting this way her studies in order to became a teacher in the Language and Literature specialty, something she always wanted to be. Even though she received her family's support yet it was not enough for her dream to come true.

On these circumstances, one of her friends spoke with her about the Rotarian Program Dollars for Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow which is administered by CHOI and supports young people longing to study at a university or technical school, by providing them scholarships. She applied for a scholarship; the evaluating committee of the program approved her application and so she was awarded a scholarship becoming a recipient of the program in 2007-II when she was taking the fourth cycle of their university studies.

Ruby was an outstanding student and obtained good grades. Successfully finished her studies at university ranked second on the merit list of her class. The program completely assumed the cost established by university for her to be able to get her professional title. On the other hand, she has already started working as a teacher at a private school since March this year. Her entire family is happy and very thankful to the program for making a difference in her life. CONGRATULATIONS RUBÍ!!!

NOTE: Her brother Albert Echevarría was also a recipient of the program and, just like Rubí is a graduated.

Después que terminó la secundaria rindió y aprobó el examen de admision de la Universidad Nacional del Santa, empezando de esta manera sus estudios para llegar a ser una profesora en la especialidad de Lengua y Literatura, algo que ella siempre quería ser. Aunque recibió el apoyo de su familia, sin embargo no fue suficiente para realizar su sueño.

En estas circunstancias, uno de sus amigos compartió con ella sobre el programa Rotario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana que es administrado por CHOI y apoya a los jóvenes que desean estudiar en la universidad o instituto técnico, proveyéndoles becas. Ella solicitó una beca; el comité evaluador del programa aprobó su solicitud y así se la otorgó una beca llegando a ser beneficiaria del programa desde el 2007-II cuando estaba cursando el cuarto ciclo de estudios universitarios.

Rubí fue una estudiante destacada y obtuvo buenas calificaciones. Concluyó exitosamente sus estudios en la universidad ocupando el segundo puesto en el cuadro de méritos de su clase. El programa asumió completamente el costo fijado por la universidad para que pueda recibir su título profesional. Por otro lado, ya ha empezado a trabajar como profesora en un colegio privado desde marzo de este año. Toda su familia está feliz y muy agradecida al programa por hacer una diferencia en su vida. ¡¡¡FELICITACIONES RUBÍ!!!

NOTA: Su hermano Albert Echevarría también fue un beneficiario del programa y, al igual que Rubí es un graduado.

Scholars at meeting

RECIPIENTS of the Rotarian program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow came together once again at CHOI's facilities to hold, this opportunity, their tenth monthly meeting 2011. As you know, this educational program is administered by the CHOI non-profit. Motivational phrases were given to students as they arrived. The meeting started with a prayer, then, the program director Mr. Rafael Armas welcomed attendees; right after, dynamics was conducted. Orlando Bermúdez shared on his experience years as coordinator of the program and the friendship bonds formed with scholars.

He also thanked Rotary and CHOI for the chance of having led the program all this time, until this month. After that, Jorge Villar, CHOI's actual executive director, presented the new program structure and its new coordinator Analí Polo who took some time to introduce the members of the new team: Carlos Santisteban, Edwin, Pablo Beltrán, Carlos Alayo, Benjamín, Silvia Floriano, Percy Segura, Luzmila. Carlos Santisteban shared on the strategic project for the program.

Then, Mr. Rafael Armas presented Miss Rubí Echevarría, former scholar (now graduated), who got her professional title in Secondary Education, Language and Literature specialty. She encouraged scholars to go forward in their efforts as students. After break, Carlos Santisteban featured a talk entitled: Motivation and Personal Growth. Then, it was congratulated scholars who turned years. Finally, students started planning Christmas for children.

LOS BENEFICIARIOS del programa Rotario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana se reunieron una vez más en las instalaciones de CHOI para llevar a cabo, esta vez, su décima reunión mensual 2011. Como saben, este programa educativo es administrado por la organización sin fines de lucro CHOI. Frases motivacionales recibieron los estudiantes a medida que llegaban. La reunión empezó con una oración, luego, el director del programa Sr. Rafael Armas dió la bienvenida a los asistentes; inmediatamente después se desarrolló las dinámicas. Orlando Bermúdez compartió sobre sus años de experiencia como coordinador del programa y los lazos de amistad formados con los becarios.

Luego, el Sr. Rafael Armas presentó a la Srta. Rubí Echevarría, ex becaria (ahora graduada), quién obtuvo su título profesional en Educación Secundaria, especialidad de Lengua y Literatura. A su vez animó a los becarios a seguir adelante en sus esfuerzos como estudiantes. Después del refrigerio, Carlos Santisteban ofreció una charla titulada: Motivación y Crecimiento Personal. Luego, se felicitó a los becarios que cumplieron años. Finalmente, los estudiantes empezaron a planificar la navidad para los niños.

Scholars Meeting, September 2011

Fellowship and food time

IT WAS HELD the ninth scholars meeting 2011 at a campestral place located at the outskirt of town. Early in the morning, the last Sunday of September, the coordinating team of the Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow program and scholars got together at CHOI facilities where it was took a bus towards the meeting site. It was planned that on that day scholars and all participantes have a good time by playing sports, sharing with one another, experiencing and strengthening friendship, learning how to coexist as team, etc.

After getting the place, the corresponding committee, made up by scholars, took some time to hand over shirts -with the program logo- to the coordinating team and scholars. Then, they came together to listen to the presentation of the guest speaker, Chimbote Rotary Club Secretary Mrs. María Plasencia who shared an insteresting theme through which they learnt how to address life avoiding what prevents us from achieving goals.

Mr. Rafael Armas (director of the program) thanked the speaker and shared encouraging words with students. After that, it was celebrated the scholars birthday that turned years in September; special time to show friendship which included songs, greetings, food and cake. Then, Mr. Orlando Bermúdez (program coordinator) reminded scholars norms starting this way sports and enjoying a good time.

SE LLEVÓ A CABO la novena reunión de becarios 2011 en un lugar campestre en las afueras de la ciudad. Temprano en la mañana, el último domingo de setiembre, el equipo de coordinación del programa Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana juntamente con los becarios se reunieron en la sede de CHOI desde donde se partió en bus con dirección al lugar de reunión. Se planeó que ese día los becarios y los demás participantes tengan un tiempo de sano esparcimiento haciendo deporte, compartiendo uno con el otro, experimentando y reforzando la amistad, aprendiendo a coexistir en equipo, etc.

Después de llegar al lugar, el comité correspondiente, formado por becarios, tomaron un tiempo para repartir polos con el -logo del programa- al equipo coordinador y a los becarios. Luego, se reunieron para escuchar la presentación de la oradora invitada Sra. María Plasencia, secretaria del Rotary Club Chimbote, quien compartió un tema interesante a través del cual aprendieron como abordar la vida evitando aquello que previene el logro de los objetivos.

El Sr. Rafael Armas (director del programa) agradeció a la ponente y compartió palabras de ánimo con los estudiantes. Después de eso, se celebró el cumpleaño de los becarios que cumplieron años en setiembre; tiempo especial para demostrar amistad que incluyó canciones, saludos, refrigerio y torta. Luego, el Sr. Orlando Bermúdez (coordinador del programa) les recordó las normas empezando de esta manera los deportes y disfrutando un buen tiempo.

First Group Of Pre-selected Ones Start Pre-university Preparation, 2012 Ingress

THE FIRST pre-selection process for new scholars, 2012 ingress -carried out by a selection committee pointed by the administration of CHOI's educational programs- successfully finished. As a result of its job, on Thursday September 15, the committee issued the list with the names of the 22 young people pre-selected who will study at CHOI's pre-university for free. The list also included the names of those young people that will study at the same academy but as holders of a half pre-university scholarship. On Friday September 16, all of them started their preparation stage, having in mind to pass the admission test they will take in a local unversity or technical school, next year and so to get a higher study scholarship.

Their studies at academy will last for six months, finishing their pre-university stage in March 2012. On Saturday September 17 a meeting was held with students, their parents and the scholarship program staff. Mr. Rafael Armas, director of the Rotarian Program Dollars For Scholars, shared about American friends and organizations -specially Chanhassen Rotary Club- making possible this opportunity for young people. Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrator of CHOI's educational programs shared about the program rules and benefits.

Miss Estefanía Moreno, CHOI's pre-university academy director, shared on preparation process of students. There was a time for attendees to make questions which were answered by staff. Family parents were so grateful for this great possibility given to their children to become professional. After the meeting, parents left CHOI facilities and students stayed there to continue with their classes.

PRIMER GRUPO DE PRE-SELECCIONADOS EMPIEZA PREPARACIÓN PRE-UNIVERSITARIA, INGRESO 2012

pre-seleccionados y sus padres 

EL PRIMER proceso de pre-selección de nuevos becarios -realizado por un comité designado por la administración de los programas educativos de CHOI- finalizó exitosamente. Como resultado, el jueves 15 de setiembre, se publicó la lista de los 22 jóvenes pre-seleccionados que estudiarán en la academia pre-universitaria completamente gratis. La lista también incluyó a los jóvenes que estudiarán en la academia, pero con asignación de media beca preparatoria. El viernes 16 de setiembre todos ellos empezaron su etapa de preparación, teniendo en mente aprobar el examen de admisión para ingresar a una universidad o escuela técnica el próximo año y así obtener una beca de estudios superiores.

Estudiarán en la academia por 6 meses, terminando su etapa preuniversitaria en marzo del 2012. El sábado 17 de setiembre hubo una reunión con los estudiantes, sus padres y el staff del programa de becas. El Sr. Rafael Armas, director del programa Rotario Dólares para Escolares, compartió sobre los amigos y organizaciones americanas -especialmente el Club Rotary Chanhassen- que hacen posible esta oportunidad para los jóvenes. El Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrador de los programas educativos de CHOI, compartió sobre las normas y beneficios del programa.

La Srta. Estefanía Moreno, directora de la academia pre-universitaria de CHOI, compartió sobre el proceso de preparación de los estudiantes. Hubo un tiempo para que los asistentes hagan sus preguntas las cuales fueron absueltas por el staff. Los padres de familia estuvieron muy agradecidos por esta gran oportunidad que tienen sus hijos para llegar a ser profesionales. Después de la reunión, los padres se retiraron de las instalaciones de CHOI y los estudiantes permanecieron para allí para continuar con sus clases.

Scholars Meeting, August 2011

Hug therapy

AS PART of the program development of monthly meetings of scholars, scheduled by CHOI, it was carried out the meeting for August 2011. As you know, CHOI manages the Rotary educational program Dollars For Scholarships and Leaders For Tomorrow, and not only this but it has also the responsability to make students to take awareness about problems at communities needing be addressed, teaching them that each of them has potential to be a main element throughout the community development process. Through the scholarship program, students are taught to deal with this reality by providing the chance for them to analyze, design and run community projects.

The Rotarian program also focuses on leadership training, by discovering and strengthening leadership skills in students to become leaders needed to make difference at their environment. At this meeting, after opening and dynamic game, the guest speaker, Ms. Vicky Corbacho, specialist in family issues, discoursed on the topic: The Meaning of Love; which generated expectation on students. She also shared on the different types of love, including love of neighbor.

After the break, it was the time to celebrate birthday of those students that turned years in August. Right after we all shared some food. Then, workteams comprised by scholars displayed the progress of their community projects; at the same time, some scholars had a meeting to define a research proposal in health area to assist a medical campaign in November. After that, all students received their montly fee and this way the meeting was over.

Terapia del abrazo

COMO PARTE del desarrollo del cronograma de reuniones mensuales de los becarios, establecido por CHOI, se llevó a cabo la reunión de agosto 2011. Como se sabe, CHOI administra el programa educativo Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana y no sólo eso, sino que también tiene la responsabilidad de hacer que los estudiantes tomen conciencia de los problemas en las comunidades que necesitan ser abordados, enseñándoles que cada uno de ellos tiene el potencial para ser un elemento importante en el proceso de desarrollo comunitario. A través del programa becario, a los estudiantes se les enseña a hacer frente a esta realidad proveyéndoles la oportunidad de analizar, diseñar y ejecutar proyectos comunitarios.

El programa Rotario también se enfoca en la formación de líderes, descubriendo y reforzando las habilidades de liderazgo en los estudiantes para que lleguen a ser los líderes que se necesitan para hacer la diferencia en su entorno. En esta reunión, después de la apertura y de la dinámica, la oradora invitada, Srta. Vicky Corbacho, especialista en asuntos de familia, disertó sobre el tema: El Significado del Amor; el cual generó expectativas en los estudiantes. También compartió sobre los diferentes tipos de amor, incluyendo el amor al prójimo.

Después del descanso, se celebró el cumpleaño de los estudiantes que cumplieron años en agosto. Inmediatamente después compartimos un buen refrigerio. Luego, Los equipos de trabajo de becarios expusieron el avance de sus proyectos comunitarios; al mismo tiempo, algunos becarios, tuvieron una reunión para definir una propuesta de investigación en el área de salud para apoyar una campaña médica en noviembre. Después de eso, todos los estudiantes recibieron su remesa mensual y de esta manera terminó la reunión.

Promoting Scholarships 2012 - I : Activity 2

Promoting at a sports complex

AS A RESULT of the first activity promoting educational scholarships 2012-I, which are available through CHOI's program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow, young people wishing to study a professional or technical career have started submitting their applications and documents required by the program, at the pre-university academy office of CHOI, to be considered as candidates. Some applicants live in neighborhoods located around father Jack's parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help, others live in communities around Saints Martyrs and Saint Francisco of Asis parishes, which make up the scope of the program.

Once again, the spread team of CHOI carried out the scholarships promotion by using loudspeakres, handing out fliers and talking to people on the streets of 7 neighborhoods: El progreso, 21 de Abril, Magdalena Nueva, Miramar, Miraflores, Alto Perú, La Victoria and Antenor Orrego. The team also was promoting scholarships at parks, markets and sport fields where some young people were found. Applicants continue submitting their scholarships applications at CHOI and can do it until the second week of September.

COMO RESULTADO de la primera actividad promocionando las becas educativas 2012-I, disponibles a través del programa de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, los jóvenes que desean estudiar una carrera profesional o técnica han empezado a dejar sus solicitudes con los documentos requeridos por el programa, en la oficina de la academia pre-universitaria de CHOI, para ser considerados como candidatos. Algunos solicitantes viven en barrios ubicados alrededor de la parroquia del padre Juan Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, otros viven en comunidades alrededor de las parroquias Santos Mártires y San Francisco de Asis, los cuales conforman el ámbito de acción del programa.

Una vez más, el equipo de difusión de CHOI realizó la promoción de las becas perifoneando, repartiendo volantes y conversando con las personas en las calles de 7 comunidades: El progreso, 21 de Abril, Magdalena Nueva, Miramar, Miraflores, Alto Perú, La Victoria y Antenor Orrego. El equipo también estuvo promocionando las becas en parques, mercados y campos deportivos donde se concentraban los jóvenes. Los solicitantes siguen presentando sus solicitudes en CHOI y lo pueden hacer hasta la segunda semana de setiembre.

Promoting Scholarships 2012 - I : Activity 1

The promotion team

THE CALL 2012 to recruit new scholars got started. The non-profit organization CHOI -that manages the Rotarian program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow- was promoting, through the director of its pre-university academy Miss Estefanía Moreno, the availability of new educational scholarships for those young people yearning to study at an university or technical school. The convocation is performed every year thanks to the great effort of people committed to the noble mission to raise funds, through many ways, for youth of Chimbote to count on scholarships which will let them start their higher studies.

One of the persons of good will and very involved in getting funds for this goal is Mr. Earl Milbrath, who serves the needy people in Chimbote through several initiatives. He is also the US administrator of the scholarship program and who made possible the agreement between Chanhassen and Chimbote Rotary Club for the benefit of the program. Well, the promotion stage was carried out by Miss Estafanía together with some teachers of the pre-university academy who first talked to principals of 15 high schools on the program. Even Mr. Milbrath himself talked to one of them whe he was here in Chimbote.

Then, they shared with senior students on scholarships and encourage them to take advantage of this great opportunity. In another circumstance, the team also went along streets by car, using loudspeakers and handing out fliers. In this opportunity, we scoured the streets of 6 neighborhoods where we reached young people. Some family parents came closer to us to inquire about scholarships for their children.

PROMOCIONANDO BECAS 2012 - I : Actividad 1

Promocionando en una calle

LA CONVOCATORIA 2012 para conseguir nuevos becarios, ya empezó. La Organización sin fines de lucro CHOI -que administra el programa rotario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana- estuvo promocionando, a través de la directora de su academia pre-universitaria Srta. Estefanía Moreno, la disponibilidad de nuevas becas educativas para los jóvenes que anhelan estudiar en una universidad o instituto. La convocatira se realiza cada año gracias al gran esfuerzo de personas comprometidas con la noble misión de recaudar fondos, a través de muchas maneras, para que la juventud de Chimbote cuente con las becas que les permitirán inciar sus estudios superiores.

Una de las personas de buena voluntad y muy involucrada en conseguir fondos para este propósito es el Sr. Earl Milbrath, quien sirve a los necesitados de Chimbote a traves de varias iniciativas. Él también es el administrador en USA del programa becario y quien hizo posible el acuerdo entre el Club Rotary de Chanhassen y Chimbote para beneficio del programa. Bien, la etapa de promoción se realizó por la Srta. Estefanía junto con algunos profesores de la academia pre-universitaria, quienes en primer lugar conversaron sobre el programa con los directores de 15 colegios secundarios. Incluso el mismo Sr. Milbrath, cuando estuvo aquí en Chimbote, conversó con uno de ellos.

Luego, compartieron con los estudiantes de 5to año sobre las becas y los animaron a aprovechar esta gran oportunidad. En otra circunstancia, el equipo recorrió las calles de 6 comunidades perifoneando y repartiendo volantes por medio de las cuales informamos a muchos jóvenes. Algunos padres de familia se acercaron a nosotros para informarse mejor acerca de las becas para sus hijos.

Students at the dynamic time

AS YOU KNOW because of previous posts, this year 2011, 33 students were admited as new scholars of CHOI's educational program Dollars For Tomorrow and Leaders For Tomorrow, after an intense selection process. These new recipients started participating at the monthly meetings of scholars, since April. They got to know what their responsabilities are as such. One of them is that scholars must design and run projects in favor of the community they live in or in any another one. They had a special time at the July scholars meeting.

After the opening prayer and words of the director and administrator of the program, Mr. Edwin Ruíz led the dynamic game. Right after, the guest speaker Ms. Vicky Corbacho, specialist in family issues, discoursed about the topic: "Values in Today's Students". Participants made interesting questions and then were given sheets of questions related to their emotional, relational, family life in order to get to know more about all of them and have a personal file of scholars.

After the break, workteams comprised by the new scholars, shared with attendees on the progress of their community projects. Then, it was celebrated the birthday of students turning years old and it was shared food. After that, the scholars board presented the program logo and remind the committees on their duties. Then, it was promoted the call to get new scholars and the computing classes offered by CHOI. Right after, students received their fee and so the meeting was over.

REUNIÓN DE BECARIOS, JULIO 2011

Estudiantes en el tiempo de la
dinámica

COMO UDS. SABEN debido a los previos posts, este año 2011, 33 estudiantes fueron admitidos como nuevos becarios del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, después de un intenso proceso de selección. Estos nuevos beneficiarios empezaron a participar en las reuniones mensuales de los becarios, desde abril. LLegaron a saber cuales son sus responsabilidades como tales. Una de ellas es que deben diseñar y ejecutar proyectos a favor de la comunidad donde viven o en cualquier otra que las necesiten. En la reunión de becarios de julio tuvieron un tiempo especial en su participación.

Después de la oración de apertura y las palabras del director y el administrador del programa, Sr. Edwin Ruíz dirigió la dinámica. Inmediatamente después, la ponente invitada Srta. Vicky Corbacho, especialista en asuntos de familia, disertó acerca del tema: "Valores en los Estudiantes de Hoy". Los asistentes hicieron interesantes preguntas y luego se les repartió hojas para que respondan a las preguntas relacionadas a su vida emocional, relacional y familiar con el objetivo de conocer más sobre cada uno de ellos y a la vez tener un archivo personal de los becarios.

Después del break, los equipos de trabajo formados por los nuevos becarios, compartieron con los asistentes sobre el progreso de sus proyectos comunitarios. Luego, se homenajeó a los estudiantes que cumplieron años y se compartió un refrigerio. Después de eso, la junta directiva de los becarios presentó el logo del programa y a los comités les recordó sus deberes. Luego, se promocionó la convocatoria para conseguir nuevos becarios y las clases de inglés ofrecidad por CHOI. Al final, los estudiantes recibieron su dinero mensual y de esta manera la reunión terminó.

Scholars Meeting, June 2011

Scholars at dynamic games

ONCE AGAIN, scholars of CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholarships and Leaders For Tomorrow held their monthly meeting, which corresponded to June 2011. As the time goes by, the new scholars group is integrating with the previous one and the friendship bonds among them are strengthening as a product of the effort, both the program team members and the students themselves, which is reflected at their meetings. This one started, as usual, taking time to pray and listen to the program coordinator's words. Then it was started the ongoing work of integration among all students through the first dynamic game led by the psychology intern Miss. Analí Polo.

After that, 5 workteams, comprised by scholars having a year or more as beneficiaries, shared with attendees the progress of their community projects. The new scholars took advantage of these presentations to learn to how to prepare their own reports when the time is right for them. Then, the guest speaker, Ms. Miriam Vivar, discoursed about Assertive Communication. After the break, it was time for the second dynamic game which students enjoyed a lot.

Right after, the scholars board took a time to remind students on the program regulations and to choose the scholarship program logo. After students shared their points of view, comments and suggestions, it was time to sing Happy Birthday and appreciate those students who turned years in June. Then, it was tasted a delicious Peruvian food, after which all students received their montly grant helping them to face their education expenses for the month. This way the meeting was over.

REUNIÓN DE BECARIOS, JUNIO 2011

Escogiendo el logo del programa

UNA VEZ MÁS, los becarios del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, llevaron a cabo su reunión mensual, la cual correspondió a junio 2011. A medida que pasa el tiempo, el nuevo grupo de becarios se está integrando al grupo ya existente y los lazos de amistad entre ellos se están fortaleciendo como producto del esfuerzo de los miembros del equipo del programa y de los mismos estudiantes, el cual se refleja en sus reuniones. Ésta reunión empezó, como siempre, dando tiempo a la oración y a las palabras del coordinador del programa. Luego se empezó el trabajo continuo de integración de los becarios a través de la primera dinámica dirigida por la interna de psicología Srta. Analí Polo.

Después de eso, 5 equipos de trabajo, formado por becarios con un año o más como becarios, compartieron con los asistentes el progreso de sus proyectos comunitarios. Los nuevos becarios aprovecharon estas presentaciones para aprender a como elaborar sus propios informes cuado a ellos les corresponda exponer sus avances. Luego, la ponente invitada, Srta. Miriam Vivar, disertó acerca de La Comunicación Asertiva. Después del descanzo, fue tiempo de realizar la segunda dinámica la cual los estudiantes disfrutaron.

Inmediatamente, la directiva de los becarios les recordó a los estudiantes el reglamento y tomaron tiempo para elegir el logo del programa de becas. Después que los estudiantes compartieron sus puntos de vista, comentarios y sugerencias, fue momento de cantar el Happy Birthday y felicitar a los estudiantes que cumplieron años en junio. Luego, se degustó una deliciosa comida peruana, después del cual los becarios recibieron su concesión mensual (dinero) que los ayudará a enfrentar sus gastos de educación del mes. De esta manera se dipo por finalizada la reunión.

IT WAS HELD the fifth meeting 2011 of the scholars of CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow. Mr. Rafael Armas, director of the program, opened the meeting. After the prayer time, the program administrator, Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, reminded them the rules and the goals for this meeting. Then, I led the projects exposition time, in which four workteams shared on the progress of their community projects as the six new workteams, comprised by the scholars 2011, learnt about it and who, besides, after exposition, got some guidance from the other scholars groups for the development of their own community projects.

Two French volunteers, Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso, joined the meeting and after introducing themselves also supported the new workteams in the design of their projects. After break, the psychology intern, Miss Analí, led the dynamics. Then, members of the Psychology Students Circle of the San Pedro Private University of Chimbote, chaired by its president Samuel Huerta, introduced themselves and shared with students the purpose of their presence.

Immediately after, students were taken a personality test. Then, the scholars board gave each student the regulation of the scholarship program and explained each point of it. Finally, there was a time to express birthday greeting to the scholars and so, the meeting was over.

SE LLEVÓ A CABO la quinta reunión 2011 de los becarios del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana. El Sr. Rafael Armas, director del programa, aperturó la reunión. Después del tiempo de oración, el administrador del programa, Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, les recordó las reglas y los objetvos para ésta reunión. Luego, estuve a cargo del tiempo de exposición de los proyectos, en el cual cuatro equipos de trabajo compartieron sobre el progreso de sus proyectos comunitarios a medida que los seis nuevos equipos de trabajo, compuesto por los becarios 2011, aprendían al respecto y quienes, además, después de la exposición, recibieron orientación de los demás grupos de becarios para el desarrollo de sus propios proyectos comunitarios.

Dos voluntarios franceses, Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso, se unieron a la reunión y después de presentarse también apoyaron a los nuevos equipos de trabajo en el diseño de sus proyectos. Después del tiempo de descanzo, la interna de psicología, Srta. Analí, dirigió el tiempo de las dinámicas. Luego, los miembros del Círculo de Estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Privada San Pedro de Chimbote, liderado por su presidente Samuel Huerta, se presentaron y compartieron el propósito de su presencia.

Inmediatamente después, a los estudantes se les tomó in test de personalidad. Luego, la directiva de los becarios facilitó a cada estudiante el reglamento del programa de becas y explicó cada punto del mismo. Finalmente, hubo un tiempo para felicitar a los becarios que cumplieron años en el mes de mayo y así, la reunión terminó.

Scholars Meeting, April 2011

The scholars' new board

ON THURSDAY April 21, 2011 it was held the fourth monthly meeting of scholars, convened by CHOI's educational program administration Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow. Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, the program administrator, opened the meeting. After a scholar led the prayer time, the program director, Mr. Rafael Armas, welcomed attendees. Then, there was a time for the new scholars to introduce themselves and so, to become part of the whole scholars group.

Some days before, scholars had elected their board of director for this year. At this meeting, it was taken a time to swear in the new board. Then, Mr. Edwin Ruiz led the dynamic games to integrate all scholars. They enjoyed this time by making new friendships and strengthening the existing ones. When that time was over, it was necessary to divide all scholars into two groups. One group was comprised by the new scholars and the other one by the rest.

The members of the first group had to divide into five workteams in order to define their community project. Ms. Estefanía Moreno was guiding the workteams for them to be able to start to define their project in favor of community. At the same time, the workteams of the other group, shared about the progress of their community project. I was leading this group. After a while, the two groups got together to celebrate the scholars' birthday and so the meeting was over.

REUNIÓN DE BECARIOS, ABRIL 2011

Becarios en el tiempo de las
dinámicas

EL JUVES 21 de abril del 2011, se llevó a cabo la cuarta reunión mensual de becarios, convocada por la administración del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Becarios y Líderes del Mañana. El Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrador del programa, aperturó a la reunión. Después que una becaria dirigió el tiempo de oración, el director del programa, Sr. Rafael Armas, dió la bienvenida a los asistentes. Luego, hubo un tiempo para que los nuevos becarios se presenten y así llegar a ser parte de todo el grupo de becarios.

Días antes, los becarios habían elegido su junta directica para este año. En ésta reunión, se juramentó a la directiva. Luego, el Sr. Edwin Ruiz desarrolló el tiempo de las dinámicas para integrar a los becarios. Ellos disfrutaron este tiempo haciendo nuevas amistades y reforzando las ya existentes. Cuando ese tiempo terminó, fue necesario divir a todos los becarios en dos grupos. Uno de ellos estuvo formado sólo por los nuevos y el otro, por los demás becarios.

Los miembros del primer grupo tuvieron que dividirse en 5 equipos de trabajo para definir su proyecto comunitario. La Srta. Estefanía Moreno estuvo orientando a este grupo para que puedan empezar a definir su proyecto a favor de la comunidad. Al mismo tiempo, los equipos de trabajo del otro grupo, compartieron sobre el progreso de su proyecto comunitario. Estuve dirigiendo este grupo. Después de un tiempo prudencial, los dos grupos se reunieron para celebrar el honomástico de aquellos becarios que cumplieron años el mes de abril y de esta manera finalizó la reunión.

AT A WARM WELCOME CEREMONY, 33 students were officially recognized as new beneficiaries of CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow. Each of them was granted a scholarship, which means, from now on, the program will make possible for them to study a professional career by paying the expenses it will generate; even, each scholarship includes the payment for them to be able to get their technical or professional's degree. The ceremony was held in the classroom of CHOI's pre-university academy Perpetual Help.

At the event, it was counted on the presence of the CHOI's present executive director Mr. Jorge Villar, the program coordinator Mr. Rafael Armas, the program administrator Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, the pre-university academy coordinator Ms. Estefanía Moreno, the academy teachers, the new scholars and family parents. They all welcomed scholars 2011, also highlighted their efforts at their academic preparation stage.

Students who got top grades in the admission examinacion, according to the specialties that they postulated to, were awarded by giving them a present to each one. Also, there was a time to execute the hair-cutting tradition to the scholars for having gotten into the university or technical school. Then, at the sharing time, we all tasted a delicious typical Peruvian dish: Papa a la huancaína. This way the ceremony was over.

DANDO LA BIENVENIDA A LOS BECARIOS 2011

EN UNA CÁLIDA ceremonia de bienvenida, 33 estudiantes fueron oficialmente reconocidos como nuevos beneficiarios del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Becarios y Líderes del mañana. A cada uno de ellos se les concedió una beca, lo cual quiere decir que, de ahora en adelante, el programa hará posible que ellos estudien una carrera profesional pagándole los gastos que ello genere; más aún, cada beca incluye el pago para que puedan obtener su título profesional o técnico. La ceremonia se llevó a cabo en el aula de la academia pre-universitaria de CHOI, Perpetuo Socorro.

En el evento, se contó con la presencia del actual director ejecutivo de CHOI Sr. Jorge Villar, el coordinador del programa Sr. Rafel Armas, el administrador del programa Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, la coordinadora de la academia pre-universitaria Srta. Estefanía Moreno, los profesores de la academia, los nuevos becarios y padres de familia. Todos ellos dieron al bienvenida a los becarios 2011, asimismo resaltaron sus esfuerzos en su etapa de preparación académica.

Los estudiantes que obtuvieron la más alta nota en el examen de admisión, de acuerdo a la especialidad a la que postularon, fueron premiados otorgándoles un presente a cada uno. También, hubo un tiempo para ejecutar el tradicional corte de peoloa los becarios por haber logrado su ingreso a la universidad o escuela técnica. Luego, en el tiempo del compartir, todos saboreamos un delicioso plato típico peruano:Papa a la huancahína. De esta manera la ceremonia se dió por concluída.
