Promoting at a sports complex

AS A RESULT of the first activity promoting educational scholarships 2012-I, which are available through CHOI's program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow, young people wishing to study a professional or technical career have started submitting their applications and documents required by the program, at the pre-university academy office of CHOI, to be considered as candidates. Some applicants live in neighborhoods located around father Jack's parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help, others live in communities around Saints Martyrs and Saint Francisco of Asis parishes, which make up the scope of the program.

Once again, the spread team of CHOI carried out the scholarships promotion by using loudspeakres, handing out fliers and talking to people on the streets of 7 neighborhoods: El progreso, 21 de Abril, Magdalena Nueva, Miramar, Miraflores, Alto Perú, La Victoria and Antenor Orrego. The team also was promoting scholarships at parks, markets and sport fields where some young people were found. Applicants continue submitting their scholarships applications at CHOI and can do it until the second week of September.

Promocionando en un mercando

COMO RESULTADO de la primera actividad promocionando las becas educativas 2012-I, disponibles a través del programa de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, los jóvenes que desean estudiar una carrera profesional o técnica han empezado a dejar sus solicitudes con los documentos requeridos por el programa, en la oficina de la academia pre-universitaria de CHOI, para ser considerados como candidatos. Algunos solicitantes viven en barrios ubicados alrededor de la parroquia del padre Juan Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, otros viven en comunidades alrededor de las parroquias Santos Mártires y San Francisco de Asis, los cuales conforman el ámbito de acción del programa.

Una vez más, el equipo de difusión de CHOI realizó la promoción de las becas perifoneando, repartiendo volantes y conversando con las personas en las calles de 7 comunidades: El progreso, 21 de Abril, Magdalena Nueva, Miramar, Miraflores, Alto Perú, La Victoria y Antenor Orrego. El equipo también estuvo promocionando las becas en parques, mercados y campos deportivos donde se concentraban los jóvenes. Los solicitantes siguen presentando sus solicitudes en CHOI y lo pueden hacer hasta la segunda semana de setiembre.

Promoting Scholarships 2012 - I : Activity 1

The promotion team

THE CALL 2012 to recruit new scholars got started. The non-profit organization CHOI -that manages the Rotarian program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow- was promoting, through the director of its pre-university academy Miss Estefanía Moreno, the availability of new educational scholarships for those young people yearning to study at an university or technical school. The convocation is performed every year thanks to the great effort of people committed to the noble mission to raise funds, through many ways, for youth of Chimbote to count on scholarships which will let them start their higher studies.

One of the persons of good will and very involved in getting funds for this goal is Mr. Earl Milbrath, who serves the needy people in Chimbote through several initiatives. He is also the US administrator of the scholarship program and who made possible the agreement between Chanhassen and Chimbote Rotary Club for the benefit of the program. Well, the promotion stage was carried out by Miss Estafanía together with some teachers of the pre-university academy who first talked to principals of 15 high schools on the program. Even Mr. Milbrath himself talked to one of them whe he was here in Chimbote.

Then, they shared with senior students on scholarships and encourage them to take advantage of this great opportunity. In another circumstance, the team also went along streets by car, using loudspeakers and handing out fliers. In this opportunity, we scoured the streets of 6 neighborhoods where we reached young people. Some family parents came closer to us to inquire about scholarships for their children.

Promocionando en una calle

LA CONVOCATORIA 2012 para conseguir nuevos becarios, ya empezó. La Organización sin fines de lucro CHOI -que administra el programa rotario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana- estuvo promocionando, a través de la directora de su academia pre-universitaria Srta. Estefanía Moreno, la disponibilidad de nuevas becas educativas para los jóvenes que anhelan estudiar en una universidad o instituto. La convocatira se realiza cada año gracias al gran esfuerzo de personas comprometidas con la noble misión de recaudar fondos, a través de muchas maneras, para que la juventud de Chimbote cuente con las becas que les permitirán inciar sus estudios superiores.

Una de las personas de buena voluntad y muy involucrada en conseguir fondos para este propósito es el Sr. Earl Milbrath, quien sirve a los necesitados de Chimbote a traves de varias iniciativas. Él también es el administrador en USA del programa becario y quien hizo posible el acuerdo entre el Club Rotary de Chanhassen y Chimbote para beneficio del programa. Bien, la etapa de promoción se realizó por la Srta. Estefanía junto con algunos profesores de la academia pre-universitaria, quienes en primer lugar conversaron sobre el programa con los directores de 15 colegios secundarios. Incluso el mismo Sr. Milbrath, cuando estuvo aquí en Chimbote, conversó con uno de ellos.

Luego, compartieron con los estudiantes de 5to año sobre las becas y los animaron a aprovechar esta gran oportunidad. En otra circunstancia, el equipo recorrió las calles de 6 comunidades perifoneando y repartiendo volantes por medio de las cuales informamos a muchos jóvenes. Algunos padres de familia se acercaron a nosotros para informarse mejor acerca de las becas para sus hijos.

Promotion Of Educational Scholarships 2011 - II

AFTER the first selection process for new scholars 2011 finished; a team, led by the coordinator of the educational program of the CHOI non-profit, Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow, through which scholarships are granted, was promoting the availability of new scholarships for young people living in neighborhoods surrounding Fr. Jack's parish and who have finished high school. For this purpose, they were invited to attend a meeting to be informed about the program, how many scholarships are available and what the requirements are to apply for one of them.

The meeting was held at the library of the parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help, whose main priest is Fr. Jack Davis. Young people interested in getting a scholarship were present, even some family parents too. Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, the program administrator, shared on this great opportunity that young people have to study at a university or technical school. Also, he spoke on the requirements and the process that must be followed to get one of them.

Besides, he specifically explained that the selected young people, through the selection process for new scholars, will start a phase of pre-university preparation at CHOI's academy, in order to be well prepared to take the admission examination at the univerisity or technical school of their choice. Students who pass the examination will automatically get a scholarship of the program.

The other members of the team: Mr. Peter Jhensen from the USA (volunteering coordinator of Los Amigos non-proit), Mr. Luis Carlos Villar, Mr. Percy Segura and me, Pablo Beltrán, also were sharing with the attendees to the meeting. Some family parents and students asked questions regarding the grant of scholarships and thanked benefactors, specially members of Chanhassen Rotary Club in Minnesota-USA, since this grant is possible because of the support and generosity of our American friends.

PROMOCIÓN DE BECAS EDUCATIVAS 2011 - II

DESPUÉS QUE TERMINÓ el primer proceso de selección de nuevos becarios 2011; un equipo, liderado por el coordinador del programa educativo de la organización sin fines de lucro CHOI, Dólares para Escolares y Léderes del Mañana, a través del cual se conceden las becas, estuvo promocionando la disponibilidad de nuevas becas para jóvenes que viven en barrios alrededor de la parroquia del padre Juan y que han terminado la secundaria. Con tal fin, se les invitó a asistir a una reunión para informarse acerca del programa, cuantas becas están disponibles y cuales son los requerimientos para solicitar una de ellas.

Lareunión se llevó a cabo en la biblioteca de la parroquia Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, cuyo sacerdote principal es el padre Juan Davis. Los jóvenes interesados en conseguir una beca estuvieron presentes, incluso algunos padres de familia también. El Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, administrador del programa, compartió esta gran oportunidad que tienen los jóvenes de estudiar en una universidad o escuela técnica. También, habló sobre los requisitos y el proceso que se debe seguir para conseguir una de ellas.

Además, explicó específicamente que los jóvenes seleccionados, a través del proceso de selección de nuevos becarios, empezarán una fase de preparación universitaria en la academia de CHOI, con el propósito de estar bien preparados para rendir el examen de admisión en la universidad o escuela técnica de su elección. Los estudiantes que pasen el examen, automaticamente obtendrán una beca del programa.

Los demás miembros del equipo: Sr. Peter Jhensen de USA (coordinador de voluntariado de la ONG Los Amigos), Sr. Luis Carlos Villar, Sr. Percy Segura y yo, Pablo Beltrán, también estuvimos compartiendo con los asistentes a la reunión. Algunos padres de familia y estudiantes hicieron preguntas respecto a la concesión de becas y agradecieron a los benefactores, especialmente a los miembros de del Club Rotary de Chanhassen en Minnesota-USA, ya que éste otorgamiento es posible debido al apoyo y generosidad de nuestros amigos americanos.

Trying To Break The Cycle

EDUCATION IS AN IMPORTANT PATH to get personal and family development and consequently of communities and countries. However teenagers living in very poor neighborhoods, like many here in Chimbote Perú, and want to continue studying after having finished high school have to face, together with their parents, the ever-present concern which is to get money to provide food for the entire family to be able to eat every single day. A majority of adults have no access job leaving families also with little access to medical care.

On this context parents can't afford to send their teenagers to university nor technical school even though they would want to; others families will have to do great sacrifices beyond their expectations destabilizing them financially. But if people don't receive education, how could they ever break the cycle of poverty?

Considering this reality, the "Dollars for Scholars" and "Leaders for Tomorrow" programs of CHOI, are looking for 35 new young people, among all those in need that belong to poor neighborhoods surrounding "La Victoria", to offer them financial aid for each of them to be able to study a professional career until they will get their academic degrees.

That's why leaders of these educational program gathered young people and some family parents at the Corazón de Jesus parish located in "Ramal Playa" neighborhood to explain them on this posibility. They all have heard about requirements and conditions to be one of the recipients. So they will have to bring required documents for their correspondent evaluation until November 30, 2009.
