Selection Process For New Scholars 2012 - I, Day 1

AFTER PROMOTING the availability of scholars for 2012 season in neighborhoods of Chimbote, young people interested in getting one of them submitted their applications at CHOI's pre-university academy office. The next step was to evaluate documents requested and interview applicants. For this purpose, an evaluation committee was established which was made up by Rafael Armas (scholarship program director), Orlando Bermúdez (CHOI's educational programs coordinator), Sr. Juanita Albratch (ACAF manager and Santiago Apóstol Hospice director), Sofía Villegas (Chimbote ROTARY club president), Marco Alva (Chimbote Business Community representative), Sr. Edith (ACAF's educational programs coordinator) and Estefanía Moreno (CHOI's pre-university academy director).

This new activity of the process for getting new scholars, was performed in two days. On Tuesday, September 13th was the first day. 22 applicants came together at CHOI facilities in the morning and one by one were interviewed. As a reference, it is so sad to say this but in most of cases here in Perú, education is a luxury, not a right. Considering this, young people coming from disadvantaged families -economically speaking- are less likely to study a professional or technical career after they finish high school.

Well, some of the applicants are still seniors at high school who, however, are already thinking of studying at a university or technical school but, as they said it, possibly won't for the same reason most young people from all over Perú neither will: Because of the lack of money. That's why they all would like to get a scholarship from the Rotarian program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow, administered by CHOI, for them to have the chance to make their dreams of becoming professional come true.

DESPUÉS DE PROMOVER la disponibilidad de becas para la temporada 2012 en los barrios de Chimbote, los jóvenes interesados en obtener una de ellas presentaron sus solicitudes en la oficina de la academia pre-universitaria de CHOI. El siguiente paso fue evaluar los documentos y entrevistar a los solicitantes. Para tal fin, se estableció un comité evaluador que estuvo formado por el Sr. Rafael Armas (director del programa becario), Orlando Bermúdez (coord. progs. educativos de CHOI), Hna. Juanita Albratch (gerente de ACAF y dir. del Hospicio Santiago Apóstol), Sofía Villegas (pdta. ROTARY club Chimbote), Marco Alva (rep. comunidad empresarial de Chimbote), Hna. Edith (coord. progs. educativos de ACAF) y Estefanía Moreno (dir. academia pre-universitaria de CHOI).

Esta nueva actividad del proceso de conseguir nuevos becarios, se llevó a cabo en dos días. El martes 13 de setiembre fue el primer día. 22 solicitantes se reunieron en las instalaciones de CHOI en la mañana y uno por uno fueron entrevistados. Como referencia, es triste decir esto pero en la mayoría de los casos aquí en Perú, la educación es un lujo, no un derecho. Considerando esto, los jóvenes que provienen de familias menos favorecidas -economicamente hablando- es menos probable que estudien una carrera técnica o profesional después que terminen la secundaria.

Bien, algunos de los solicitantes todavía son estudiantes del útimo año de secundaria quienes, sin embargo, ya están pensando en estudiar en una universidad o escuela técnica pero, como lo dijeron, posiblemente no lo harán por la misma razón que la mayoría de los jóvenes del Perú tampoco lo harán: Falta de dinero. Por eso, a todos ellos les gustaría obtener una beca del programa Rotario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, el cual es administrado por CHOI, para que tengan la oportunidad de hacer realidad sus sueños de ser profesionales.
