IT WAS HELD the fifth meeting 2011 of the scholars of CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow. Mr. Rafael Armas, director of the program, opened the meeting. After the prayer time, the program administrator, Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, reminded them the rules and the goals for this meeting. Then, I led the projects exposition time, in which four workteams shared on the progress of their community projects as the six new workteams, comprised by the scholars 2011, learnt about it and who, besides, after exposition, got some guidance from the other scholars groups for the development of their own community projects.

Two French volunteers, Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso, joined the meeting and after introducing themselves also supported the new workteams in the design of their projects. After break, the psychology intern, Miss Analí, led the dynamics. Then, members of the Psychology Students Circle of the San Pedro Private University of Chimbote, chaired by its president Samuel Huerta, introduced themselves and shared with students the purpose of their presence.

Immediately after, students were taken a personality test. Then, the scholars board gave each student the regulation of the scholarship program and explained each point of it. Finally, there was a time to express birthday greeting to the scholars and so, the meeting was over.

SE LLEVÓ A CABO la quinta reunión 2011 de los becarios del programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana. El Sr. Rafael Armas, director del programa, aperturó la reunión. Después del tiempo de oración, el administrador del programa, Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, les recordó las reglas y los objetvos para ésta reunión. Luego, estuve a cargo del tiempo de exposición de los proyectos, en el cual cuatro equipos de trabajo compartieron sobre el progreso de sus proyectos comunitarios a medida que los seis nuevos equipos de trabajo, compuesto por los becarios 2011, aprendían al respecto y quienes, además, después de la exposición, recibieron orientación de los demás grupos de becarios para el desarrollo de sus propios proyectos comunitarios.

Dos voluntarios franceses, Victor Moissonnier and Pierre Del Grosso, se unieron a la reunión y después de presentarse también apoyaron a los nuevos equipos de trabajo en el diseño de sus proyectos. Después del tiempo de descanzo, la interna de psicología, Srta. Analí, dirigió el tiempo de las dinámicas. Luego, los miembros del Círculo de Estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Privada San Pedro de Chimbote, liderado por su presidente Samuel Huerta, se presentaron y compartieron el propósito de su presencia.

Inmediatamente después, a los estudantes se les tomó in test de personalidad. Luego, la directiva de los becarios facilitó a cada estudiante el reglamento del programa de becas y explicó cada punto del mismo. Finalmente, hubo un tiempo para felicitar a los becarios que cumplieron años en el mes de mayo y así, la reunión terminó.

Seeking To Establish a Partnership

AS YOU KNOW by my previous post, it was made contact with a board member of the Psychology Students Circle of the San Pedro Private University - CIESPSI USP, who reported the other board members about a possible partnership with CHOI's educational programs management. It was necessary to discuss on the proposal for work and other issues inherent in it, so a meeting was scheduled with the board of CIESPSI USP and the administrator of the educational programs of CHOI, which was held at the headquarters of the last one.

At the meeting, CHOI's educational programs administrator, Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, shared about the need to strengthen some aspects of the programs, specially, regarding to the vocational orientation of students, how to achieve the active participation of the family parents in the professional formation process of their children, among others. In his turn, the president of the CIESPSI USP, Samuel Huerta, reported on the willing of his group to support CHOI's educational programs.

He also said that, if necessary, the health sciences faculty could get involved, even the university itself. As a result of the meeting, the president of the CIESPSI USP expressed his commitment to redact, together with his team, the work plan, considered as pilot plan at this stage, which will last for 6 months, ending in November 2011. In effect, some days later, he submitted the document. The staff of CHOI's educational programs agreed with the proposal and this way the partnership started up.

CONEXIÓN CON EL CÍRCULO DE ESTUDIANTES DE PSICOLOGÍA DE LA USP

COMO UDS. SABEN por mi entrada previa, se hizo contacto con un miembro de la junta directiva del Círculo de Estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Privada San Pedro - CIESPSI USP, quien informó a los demás miembros de la junta sobre una posible sociedad con la gerencia de los programas educativos de CHOI. Fue necesario conversar sobre la propuesta de trabajo y otros asuntos inherentes a la misma, asi que, se programó una reunión con los directivos del CIESPSI USP y el administrador de los programas educativos de CHOI, el cual se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones de la última.

En la reunión, el administrador de los programas educativos de CHOI, Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, compartió sobre la necesidad de fortalecer algunos aspectos de los programas, especialmente, respecto a la orientación vocacional de los estudiantes, como lograr la participación activa de los padres de familia en el proceso de formación profesional de sus hijos, entre otros. En su turno, el presidente del CIESPSI USP, Samuel Huerta, compartió sobre la disposición de su grupo para apoyar a los programas educativos de CHOI.

También dijo que, si es necesario, la facultad de ciencias podría involucrarse, incluso la universidad misma. Como resultado de la reunión, el presidente del CIESPSI USP expresó su compromiso de redactar, junto a su equipo, el plan de trabajo, considerado como plan piloto en ésta etapa, el cual durará 6 meses, finalizando en noviembre del 2011. En efecto, algunos días después, presentó el documento. El equipo a cargo de los programas educativos de CHOI estuvo de acuerdo con la propuesta y de esta manera la sociedad se inició.

Connection With The Psychology Students Circle Of The USP

SOME GOALS can be achieved by partnering with groups and individual sharing purposes and passions. On this context, I made contact with the Psychology Students Circle of the San Pedro Private University of Chimbote (CIESPSI USP), through one of its board members, the student Lester Salcedo. I shared with him on the possibility for psychology students to be able to use their knowledge and skills in communities where they are needed. He told me that would be very possible and agreed to talk on this issue with the board of the students circle.

On the other side, the educational programs management of CHOI such as Pre-university Academy and Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow, that provide pre-university preparation and scholarhips for young people from humble communities to study a university or technical career, was considering the need to count on trained people in psychology to support the programs in this area. So, I facilitated a meeting between Lester Salcedo and Orlando Bermúdez, administrator of CHOI's educational programs.

At this meeting, in which I participated as collaborator of the educational programs, it was shared general information on the goals of both organizations and also on their assests and needs, in order to make some kind of partnership. Lester Salcedo spread the word in the university community. The next meeting will be with the programs administrator and the board of the psychology students circle at CHOI's headquarters.

CONEXIÓN CON EL CÍRCULO DE ESTUDIANTES DE PSICOLOGÍA DE LA USP

ALGUNOS OBJETIVOS se pueden lograr asociándose con grupos e individuos que comparten propósitos y pasiones. En éste contexto, hice contacto con el Círculo de Estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Privada San Pedro de Chimbote (CIESPSI USP), a través de uno de los miembros de su junta directiva, el estudiante Lester Salcedo. Compartí con él sobre la posibilidad para que los estudiantes de psicología puedan aplicar su conocimiento y habilidades en las comunidades donde las necesiten. Me dijo que eso sería muy posible y se comprometió a conversar sobre este tema con la junta directiva del círculo de estudiantes.

Por otro lado, la gerencia de los programas educativos de CHOI tales como Academia pre-universitaria y Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana, que proveen preparación pre-universitaria y becas para que los jóvenes de comunidades humildes estudien una carrera técnica o profesional, estuvo considerando la necesidad de contar con personas capacitadas en psicología para apoyar a los programas en ésta área. Por lo tanto, facilité una reunión entre Lester Salcedo y Orlando Bermúdez, administrador de los programas educativos de CHOI.

En ésta reunión, en la cual participé como colaborador de los programas educativos, se compartió información general sobre los objetivos de ambas organizaciones y también sobre sus capacidades y necesidades, con el propósito de hacer algún tipo de sociedad. Lester Salcedo compartió el asunto en la comunidad universitaria. La siguiente reunión será con el administrador de los programas y la junta directiva del Círculo de Estudiantes de Psicología en la sede de CHOI.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 3

AND THIS WAS the third and last working day of the Lamoure group from ND-USA improving three houses here in Chimbote. The members group started their activities in the morning. They all made a great effort to advance the improvement of the houses. So, young and adult people worked hard. After lunch they all continued working with a goal on mind: To provide a decent house to these families for them to live with dignity. They kept working until the sun went down.

At this point, I'd like to share with you, the heartfelt thanks expressed by each of the beneficiaries to the members of the Lamoure group. Mrs. Sandra Torres said: "I am very thankful to this American group for improving the house where I live with my family. May God bless and have a good trip." Mrs. Yovanna said: "I feel so happy because of the great support I have received from this American benefactors group, many thanks for your kindness showed to me and my family. May God bless you richly".

Mrs. Esperanza said: "Thank you very much for all you have done for my family. Thank you for improving my house, for giving a bed away to me and for installing a sewer pipe. I will always remeber you for their kind heart. May God bless you and have a nice trip." This way the mission of the Lamoure group finished here in Chimbote-Perú. I just wanna say, thank you ever so much for keeping in your heart and mind to those needy people of Chimbote.

Y ÉSTE FUE el tercer y último día de trabajo que realizó el grupo Lamoure de ND-USA mejorando tres casas aquí en Chimbote. Los miembros del grupo empezaron sus actividades en la mañana. Todos hicieron un gran esfuerzo para avanzar el mejoramiento de las casas. Así que, los jóvenes y adultos trabajaron denodadamente. Después del almuerzo todos siguieron trabajando con un propósito en mente: Proveer una casa decente a estas familias para que vivan con dignidad. Ellos siguieron trabajando hasta que el sol se puso.

En éste punto, me gustaría compartir con ustedes, el más sincero agradecimiento que expresaron las beneficiarias a los miembros del grupo Lamoure. La señora Sandra Torres dijo: "Estoy muy agradecida a éste grupo americano por mejorar la casa donde vivo con mi familia. Que Dios les bendiga y que tengan un buen viaje". La señora Yovanna dijo: "Me siento muy feliz debido al gran apoyo que he recibido de éste grupo de benefactores americanos, muchas gracias por su bondad que mostraron a mi familia y a mí. Que Dios les bendiga ricamente".

La señora Esperanza dijo: "Muchas gracias por todo lo que han hecho for mi familia. Gracias por mejorar mi casa, por donarme una cama y por instalar la tubería de desagüe. Siempre les recordaré por su noble corazón. Que Dios les bendiga y tengan un buen viaje". De esta manera, la misión del grupo Lamoure terminó aquí en Chimbote-Perú. Sólo me resta decir, muchísimas gracias por mantener en su mente y corazón a las personas necesitadas de Chimbote.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 2

ON THIS POST, I will share about the second day of activities carried out by the Lamoure group from ND-USA in its home improvement project. Early in the morning, each of the three teams headed to the respective houses they had started improving. On this day, they continued doing the work that started yesterday. After lunch, they all returned to the houses to keep working. At the end of the afternoon, the first team, that was working in Mrs. Sandra Torres' house, had finished to build an estera room.

Mrs. Sandra, in a short interview said: "As I see my hose being built, I feel so happy since now I will have a safer place where to live and that gives my family and me, a feeling of protecction". The second team finished the day having built a room and a half. The owner of this house said: "A while ago, I felt very worried because my house had deteriorated and we had no money to improve it, since we spent money in my son's treatment who finally died of leukemia. But now I feel happy of seeing my house being improved".

At the end of the afternoon, the third team had finished to build a room. Mrs. Esperanza Morales, beneficiary of this project, said: "I used to live in a rented room which was a very small place for me and my children to live. we felt no freedom living there. Now, I feel so happy specially for my children, since we will have a better place to live." Well, the second activities day of the Lamoure group finished this way.

ACTIVIDADES DEL GRUPO LAMOURE 2011 - DÍA 2

EN ÉSTA ENTRADA, compartiré acerca del segundo día de actividades realizadas por el grupo Lamoure de ND-USA en su proyecto de mejoramiento de vivienda. Temprano por la mañana, cada uno de los tres equipos se dirigieron a las respectivas casas que habian empezado a mejorar. En este día, ellos siguieron haciendo el trabajo que empezaron ayer. Después del almuerzo, todos regresaron a las casas para seguir trabajando. Al final de la tarde, el primer equipo, que estuvo trabajando en la casa de la Sra. Sandra Torres, había terminado de construir una habitacion de estera.

La Sra. Sandra, en una corta entrevista dijo: "A medida que veo a mi casa siendo construída, me siento muy feliz ya que ahora tendré un lugar más seguro donde vivir y eso le dá a mi familia y a mí, un sentimiento de protección". El segundo equipo terminó el día habiendo construído una habitación y media. La dueña de ésta casa dijo: "Hace un tiempo atrás, me sentí muy preocupada porque mi casa se había deteriorado y no teníamos dinero para mejorarla, ya que gastamos dinero en el tratamiento de mi hijo quien finalmente murió de leucemia. Pero ahora me siento feliz de ver que mi casa está siendo mejorada".

Al final de la tarde, el tercer equipo había terminado de construir una habitación. La Sra. Esperanza Morales, beneficiaria de éste proyecto, dijo: "Solía vivir en un cuarto alquilado el cual era un lugar muy pequeño para que mis hijos y yo vivamos. No sentíamos libertad viviendo allí. Ahora, me siento muy feliz especialmente por mis hijos, ya que tendremos un mejor lugar donde vivir". Bien, el segundo día de actividades del grupo Lamoure terminó de esta manera.

Lamoure Group Activities 2011 - Day 1

AS PLANNED, the Lamoure group from North Dakota-USA, comprised by 18 poeple, came down to Chimbote-Perú in order to support some poor families in the improvement of their houses. Their first day of activities started on Monday, June 6. The whole group, together with the ACAF social worker Ana Caldas, the volunteering coordinator Peter Jensen, translators and me, Pablo Beltrán (CHOI non-profit representative); left the ACAF compound, located in La Victoria neighborhood, and went to the selected houses where the group would start working.

The group leader, Mrs. Marie Ann Bitz, shared with me about the willingness of her group to support the Chimbote Community Development. Well, we all stopped by Mrs. Rosa Nieves' house to see the concrete front wall, whose building the group funded. Then, we got to Mrs. Sandra Torres' house, the first one the American volunteers chose to work. The group was divided into 3 teams and one of them stayed in this house to start the home improvement process.

The second team went to Mrs. Yovanna Estrada's house and inmediatly started working. The third team got to Mrs. Esperanza Morales' house with the same purpose and also to prepare the installation of the sewer pipe in her house. After a while some members of this team went to volunteer to the Holy Family youth saloon, which is a place specially for children having some difficulties in learning. So, the volunteers were assisting some children in doing their homeworks. This way, the first work day of the group was over.

ACTIVIDADES DEL GRUPO LAMOURE 2011 - DÍA 1

COMO ESTUVO PLANEADO, el grupo Lamoure de Dakota del Norte-USA, formado por 18 personas, llegaron a Chimbote-Perú con el propósito de apoyar a algunas familiar pobres en el mejoramiento de sus casa. Su primer día de actividades empezó el lunes 6 de junio. Todo el grupo, junto con la asistenta social de ACAF Sra. Ana Caldas, el coordinadore de voluntariado Peter Jensen, los traductores y yo, Pablo Beltrán -representante del proyecto Chimbote ABCD-, partimos desde las oficinas de ACAF, localizada en el barrio La Victoria, y fuimos a las casas selecionadas donde el grupo empezaría a trabajar.

La líder del grupo, Sra. Marie Ann Bitz, comaprtió conmigo acerca de la disposición de su grupo para apoyar el desarrollo comunitario de Chimbote. Bien, en el camino pasamos por la casa de la Sra. Rosa Nieves para ver la frontera de concreto, cuya construcción el grupo financió. Luego, llegamos a la casa de la Sra. Sandra Torres, la primera que los americanos voluntarios elegieron para trabajar. El grupo se dividió en tres equipos y uno de ellos permaneció en ésta casa para empezar el proceso de mejoramiento de la vivienda.

El segundo equipo fue a la casa de la Sra. Yovanna Estrada e inmediatamente empezaron a trabajar. El tercer equipo llegó a la casa de la Sra. Esperanza Morales con el mismo propósito y también para preparar la instalación de la tubería de desague en su casa. Después de un momento algunos miembros de éste equipo fueron a hacer trabajo de voluntariado en el Salón Juvenil Sagrada Familia, el cual es un lugar especialmente para los niños que tienes problemas de aprendizaje. Así, los voluntarios estuvieron a algunos niños a hacer sus tareas escolares. De esta manera terminó el primer día de trabajo del grupo.

Improving Sandra Torres' House

ON THIS POST, I will share with you some aspects of Mrs. Sandra Torres' family life. She is 30 years old and together with her family live in B-46 san Miguel neighborhood. She is a single mother since her husband left home. She has 3 children: 12-year-old Lavil De La Fuente, 7-year-old Darin De La Fuente and 6-year-old Milagros De La Fuente. To make money she washes pots, dishes, etc at a soup kitchen supported by ACAF. Also delivers food to the houses of the commensals. She and her children live in a house made of estera.

She tried to improve her house through the support of the government housing program but could not get it because it was canceled. Since estera is a fragile material, the front wall of her house was deteriorated leaving the entire family in risk situations. To address this problem she went to ACAF's Social Work Office to ask for some support. This need was known by the Lamoure group from ND-USA that funded the building of the concret front wall for the family, in coordination with ACAF and CHOI.

MEJORANDO LA CASA DE SANDRA TORRES

En ésta entrada, compartiré con ustedes algunos aspectos de la vida familiar de la Sra. Sandra Torres. Ella tiene 30 años y junto a su familia viven en el barrio San Miguel B-46. Es madre soltera ya que su esposo abandonó el hogar. Tiene 3 hijos: Lavil De La Fuente de 12 años, Darin De La Fuente de 7 años y Milagros De La Fuente de 6 años. Para ganar dinero ella lava los utensilios de cocina en un comedor que es apoyado por ACAF. También lleva la comida a la casa de los comensales. Ella y sus hijos viven en una casa de estera.

Intentó mejorar su casa a través del apoyo del programa de vivienda del gobierno pero no pudo conseguirlo porque fue cancelado. Ya que la estera es un material frágil, la frontera de su casa se deterioró dejando a toda la familia en situaciones de riesgo. Para hacer frente a este problema, ella fue a la Oficina de Servicio Social a solicitar algún tipo de ayuda. Los miembros de grupo Lamoure de ND-USA, enterados de esta necesidad, financiaron la construcción de la fachada de material noble para la familia, en coordinación con ACAF y CHOI.
