USA Rotarian Leaders Visit Chimbote

The American visitors with leaders
of Chimbote Rotary Club

A FEW WEEKS AGO, an American team comprised for three leaders of Chanhassen Rotary Club, located in Minnessota-USA, visited Chimbote. The present president of the Club Mrs. Carol Lee, the past president Mr. Wayne Larson and Mr. Earl Milbrath traveled several hours by plain then by bus in order to fulfill an agenda focused on development community which included visits to local organizations working in favor of those less advantaged in this city.

On this context, they visited Chimbote Rotary Club and talked to its leaders about the work this Chimbotano Club is carrying out for community and the possibility the American Club may canalize any kind of support to the local Club. Then they visited Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI) non-profit organization and its community programs and were informed on their purposes. Also, they were working as volunteers assiting on the making of the floor made of concrete blocks for "Los 8 Enanitos" wawawasi located in F-7 San Miguel neighborhood.

They took some time to get involved with CHOI's educational program Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow program by participating in the first scholars meeting 2011 which takes place monthly and where students are trained as leaders and also share about their community projects. These were some of the main activities our American Rotarian friends performed while here in this warm city called Chimbote.

LÍDERES ROTARIOS AMERICANOS VISITAN CHIMBOTE

Rotarios americanos trabajando
en un wawawasi

HACE ALGUNAS semanas atrás, un equipo americano formado por tres líderes del Club Rotary de Chanhassen, ubicado en Minessota-USA, visitaron Chimbote. La actual presidenta del Club Sra. Carol Lee, el anterior presidente Sr. Wayne Larson and el Sr. Earl Milbrath viajaron varias horas en avión y luego en bus para cumplir una agenda enfocada en el desarrollo comunitario la cual incluía visitas a organizaciones locales que trabajan a favor de los menos favorecidos de ésta ciudad.

En este contexto, visitaron el Club Rotary de Chimbote y conversaron con sus líderes sobre el trabajo que el Club viene realizando a favor de la comunidad y sobre la posibilidad que el Club americano pueda canalizar algún tipo de apoyo al Club local. Luego, vivistaron la Organización No Gubernamental Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI) y sus programas comunitarios y se informaron sobre sus propósitos. También, estuvieron trabajando como voluntarios apoyando en la elaboración del piso hecho de bloques de concreto para el wawawasi "Los 8 Enanitos" ubicado en el barrio San Miguel F-7.

Además, tomaron un tiempo para involucrarse en el programa educativo de CHOI Dólares para Becarios y Líderes del Mañana, participando en la primera reunión de becarios del 2011 el cual se lleva a cabo mensualmente y donde los estudiantes son capacitados como líderes y también comparten sobre sus proyectos comunitarios. Éstas fueron algunas de las actividades principales que nuestros amigos Rotarios americanos realizaron mientras estuvieron aquí, en ésta cálida ciudad llamada Chimbote.

Scholars Meeting January 2011

Scholars doing exercises

ON SUNDAY January 30, 2011 it was held the first scholars meeting of this year. It was a very special one, not only for the great guests who attended but for the innovative topics shared with scholars in this training event. The special guests were three American prople. The present Chanhassen-MN-USA Rotary Club president Mrs. Carol Lee, the past president of the same Rotarian Club Mr. Wayne Larson and of course, Mr. Earl Milbrath, who has the special responasibilty to raise funds in the U.S. for the Dollars For scholars and Leader For Tomorrow program to continue running and to support even more young people.

Mr. Rafael Armas, responsable of the program in Chimbote, opened the meeting. The goal of this training event was to develop leadership skills of scholars and to define the idea of their community projects for this year. Speakers were: Mr. Orlando Bermúdez, Mr. Edwin Ruíz, Ms. Estefanía Moreno and me Pablo Beltrán. This was the agenda content:

• Introduction: Setting purpose of Leaders For Tomorrow.
• What does leadership look like?
• Icebreaker activity.
• Teambuilding exercise.
• Skillbuilding: Practicing the skill of looking at what we have now and the skill of envisioning the ideal.
• Break time.
• Exploring some possible topics for Leaders For Tomorrow projects
• Workgroups: Defining community projects
• Small groups share with each other their project ideas.
• What did we learn today?
• Feedback.
• Words of the guests.
• Scheduling the next meeting and closure of the event.

All scholars participated actively in each of the topics developed. This way the training meeting was held successfully and students pledged to continue studying and contributing to the development of their community.

REUNIÓN DE BECARIOS, ENERO 2011

Sharing about their careers

EL DOMINGO 30 de enero del 2011, se llevó a cabo la primera reunión de becarios de este año. Fue una reunión singular, no sólo por los invitados especiales que asistieron sino por los temas innovadores compartidos en ese evento de capacitación. Tres americanos fueron los invitados especiales. La actual presidenta del Club Rotary de Chanhassen-MN-USA Sra. Carol Lee, el anterior presidente del mismo Club Rotario Sr. Wayne Larson y por supuesto, el Sr. Earl Milbrath, que tiene la especial responsabilidad de conseguir fondos en los Estados Unidos para que el programa Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana se siga ejecutando y apoye incluso a más jóvenes con una beca para estudios superiores.

El Sr. Rafael Armas, responsable del programa en Chimbote, aperturó la reunión. El objetivo de éste evento de capacitación fue desarrollar las habilidades de liderazgo de los becarios y definir la idea de sus proyectos comunitarios para este año. Los ponentes fueron el Sr. Orlando Bermúdez, Sr. Edwin Ruíz, Srta. Estefanía Moreno y mi persona Pablo Beltrán. Éste fue el contenido de la agenda:

• Introducción: Estableciendo el propósito de Líderes del Mañana.
• ¿Cómo se ve el liderazgo?
• Actividad de rompehielos.
• Ejercicio de trabajo en equipo.
• Skillbuilding: Practicando la habilidad de ver lo que tenemos ahora y la habilidad de imaginar lo ideal.
• Descanzo.
• Explorando posibles temas para los proyectos de Líderes del Mañana.
• Grupos de trabajo: Definiendo los proyectos comunitarios.
• Los grupos comparten entre si sus ideas de proyecto.
• ¿Qué aprendimos hoy?
• Retroalimentación.
• Palabras de los invitados.
• Programación de la siguiente reunión y clausura del evento.

Todos los becarios participaron activamente en cada uno de los temas desarrollados. De esta manera la reunión de capacitación se desarrolló satisfactoriamente y los estudiantes se comprometieron a seguir estudiando y contribuyendo al desarrollo de su comunidad.
