About Current Chimbote City

In its early days, Chimbote was a thriving resort town and lucrative fishing port. Because of that Chimbote was known as "The First Fishing Port of Perú" by the fifties. As time went by, Chimbote has been affected by several deacades of economic problems and poverty started appearing little by little creating dramatic living conditions for the residents of city, especially for those less advantaged.

Today, Chimbote has become one of the poorest and most contaminated cities of Perú. Most of the pollution comes from outdated fishmeal factories which pump toxins and other harmful substances to health into the air, soil and water causing the population of Chimbote to catch deseases especially the most vulnerable, children.

Presently, the city is overburdened and holds more than 400,000 residents, many of whom live on land on the outskirts of town that is not their own. They have invaded the land where are living so are called invaders.
